Corrie's Toyah heartbreak teased as Charlie de Melo hints at new Imran baby betrayal

Coronation Street’s Imran Habeeb is set for more turmoil next week after finding out the true parentage of Abi Webster’s new baby.

Abi’s world was sent spiralling when she gave birth to her son Alfie on what would have been Seb Franklin’s birthday – and she immediately knew the baby wasn’t Kevin’s.

Instead, her one night stand with Imran had come back to bite her.

And now Imran actor Charlie De Melo has insisted that his character “would sacrifice” his existing relationship with Toyah Battersby and their new foster daughter Elsie to be with his biological son.

Speaking to Daily Star and other press, the star explained: “In these initial few scenes in the neonatal care unit, when he sees his son for the first time – he’s premature, he’s tiny, he’s hooked up to wires and has machines that are helping him breathe and feeding him.

“He’s this little guy who is so helpless and needs help, not just from the medical staff, but also his family unit.

“Imran makes an instinctive snap decision that this is where I need to be, this is the only thing that matters. I think that’s actually a line that’s said out loud.

“The sacrifices he is willing to make, in terms of the set up he has at home: his career, the love of his life in Toyah, the situation with fostering Elsie which is looking to progress to her being a more permanent fixture in their household.”

He continued: “All of that he is willing – if not to outright give it up, he is certainly willing to risk it in order to be present and be there for his son, and by extension for Abi in order to make sure that her previous misdemeanours and mistakes aren’t used as a way to keep her away from Alfie as well.”

The star explained that the “consequences” of Imran’s actions are “finally coming to greet him” – as he can no longer hide from Alfie and, by extension, Abi.

He said: “This is now his responsibility. He has to take control of the situation, he can’t run away from or lie his way out of it this time.”

But ahead of finding out about Alfie’s true paternity, Imran is living in an oblivious bubble, Charlie explained.

He said: “At the initial stage in the proceedings, I don’t think he’s actually worried about it too much.

“He thinks, ‘I have my foster daughter who is objectively adorable, and sweet natured, and beautiful, and someone who needs my care and love and support and attention, my partner…’

“He has this little unit, and it’s almost like remembering that time you tripped up on the way to a really lovely experience. Imran had forgotten about the slip up, that’s not a concern of his anymore because it’s forgotten about.

“He regained his footing, carried on walking and now he’s in this lovely situation.”

Charlie wondered: “Why would he, in his mind, be concerned about anything when you’ve got something so wonderful in front of you, why would you be looking behind like that?”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
