Channel 4 Countdown fans want former show star Carol Vorderman to replace Anne Robinson following her exit.
Anne Robinson, 77, is stepping down as the host after spending just one year “in the hot seat”.
Last year, the former Weakest Link star joined the Channel 4 quiz show, becoming its sixth presenter and the first female to take the role.
In light of Anne’s departure, former Countdown legend and mathematician Carol Vorderman shared some words of encouragement which led fans to ask her to be the show’s host.
She tweeted Anne, saying: “Awwwww… lovely Countdown. Hope you enjoyed it immensely, Anne.”
The Countdown veteran, who hosted the popular Channel 4 offering for 26 years between 1982 – 2008, was instantly bombarded with tweets asking if she’d take up the position.
One viewer tweeted: “Carol, you’d be perfect for the show. Please come back and be the show’s host.”
Another wrote: “Ever thought of going back to host the show Carol ? to sit in Dickie’s chair & present it as the main man once did.”
A third penned: “You’d be up for hosting it yourself, Vorders? Go on!”
Another added: “Next Countdown host? I’d suggest maybe contenders could be: Carol Vorderman, Claudia Winkleman and Warwick Davis.
Anne, who recorded 265 episodes of the show, said of her decision to quit: “I’ve had a blast hosting this wonderful show. And I stayed longer than I signed up for. Now it is time for an older woman to take the reins.
Anne, who recently teased a career change, added: “I hope, too, I’ve encouraged TV bosses to realise that not all women at the wrong end of their seventies are in care homes playing bingo and watching conjuring tricks.”
A replacement for Anne is yet to be announced by Channel 4 but bookies already have Romesh Ranganathan and Carol Vorderman in place as firm favourites for the iconic role.
Anne will appear until the summer with a new host announced in due course, Channel 4 confirmed.
