Dan Walker begs bosses for BBC Breakfast return after co-star's huge announcement

Dan Walker is already begging BBC Breakfast bosses for a return to the show, after his former co-star Carol Kirkwood announced her engagement live on the programme.

Dan quit the show just last week, with his last ever episode being Tuesday, May 17, as he prepares to make the move over from BBC to Channel 5.

But after an emotional exit, the star is already clamouring to be back.

Taking to social media, Dan wrote alongside a snap of the pair hugging: “Carol Kirkwood is the best of us.

“Delighted she has found someone who can handle her headlock hugs. Congratulations Carol.

“If you get married live on #BBCBreakfast can I come back for a one off?”

Messages of congratulations have been flooding in from fans since Carol announced the news of her engagement live on BBC Breakfast this morning (May 23).

The news came out as she stood in the gardens of the Chelsea Flower Show, as her co-star Sally Nugent said: “I’m a little bit concerned about you this morning. I don’t know how you’re managing to stand up with that giant rock on your left hand, Carol!”

Glancing down at her hand, Carol joked: “Oh, that one? Thank you Sal! It is rather nice, I got engaged.”

Carol explained she was enjoying a picnic while on holiday with her “extremely handsome” boyfriend when he began to look nervous, before he finally pulled out the ring and proposed.

She said: “I got engaged. We got engaged when we were on holiday. So it’s lovely news and we’re both thrilled, so thank you!”

Presenter Jon Kay then interjected: “We’re all thrilled, we’re all so chuffed for you Carol, on behalf of all the team here and everybody watching, I’m sure. Absolutely delighted.”

Eagle-eyed fans had spotted Carol sporting her new rock on the ring finger of her left hand even before she made the official announcement – and flocked to social media to share their thoughts.

One penned on Twitter: “@BBCBreakfast @jonkay01 @sallynugent Carol @carolkirkwood sporting an engagement [ring emoji]?”

Another gushed: “Looks beautiful there just like you, but have noticed that you have [an] engagement ring on your wedding ring finger, have I missed something!”

As a third fan wrote: “Is that a ring on there finger Mrs? Get in!”

Carol has opened up in the past about her relationship with her “extremely handsome” boyfriend – though she prefers to keep him out of the public eye.

Speaking at the release of her first novel, Under a Greek Moon, she explained: “I don’t want to say too much about my boyfriend, but I will say that he is very kind and very funny – he’s always making me laugh. And extremely handsome, as well!”

She added to Prima Magazine: “He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic – it’s 2.45am!

“And he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work.

“That, to me, is worth a million red roses.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
