Dan Walker confronts MP Liz Truss over Russian donor snap as BBC Breakfast turns tense

Dan Walker has been praised by BBC Breakfast viewers following an interview with Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

The 44-year-old presenter quizzed her on an unexpected snap showing her Russian financial links with the Conservative government.

During Wednesday’s episode of the morning show, Dan and co-host Sally Nugent were joined my Truss to discuss the Tory Party’s planned sanctions against Vladimir Putin.

Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Dan didn’t waste time in asking Ms Truss on questions as reports emerged Russian donors had given around £2million to the government.

He asked: “How damaging is that for the government at the moment?”

Ms Truss responded “Any donation to any political party has to be fully declared. The person donating has to be on the electoral register here in Britain.

“And of course, there are people who have moved out of Russia and become British citizens, who are part of our country.

“And what is important is that the people we are targeting with sanctions are oligarch close to Vladimir Putin; that is not general comment about Russian citizens or people from Russia who may have become British citizens.”

Dan Walker didn’t hold back during the interview with Liz Truss

“The biggest female donor, her wealth comes from her husband Vladimir who has strong links to the Kremlin.

“”Her wealth comes from her husband who has strong links to the Kremlin.

“In that picture, at the time, there were six female Cabinet members. Liz Truss shows us, doesn’t it, the closeness of the British government to Russian money?”

Ms Truss answered: “What I can say to you today is that we will target anybody who we believe has links to the Putin regime, who is helping support the Putin government and nothing is off the table.”
