Former Dancing on Ice champion Sonny Jay has revealed who he wants to win this year’s competition.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star at the BRIT Awards, the 28-year-old Capital Breakfast presenter confirmed that he is backing Scottish singer Connor Ball, 25, for glory this time around.
During the chat, Sonny also shared his opinion that the quality of skaters this year vast outranks the 2021 Dancing on Ice cast which he skated against.
Sonny, who took home the trophy alongside his professional skating partner Angela Egan, additionally admitted that he wouldn’t “stand a chance” amidst this year’s crop of talented celebrity skaters – despite winning last year’s show.
Sonny exclusively told Daily Star: “I’m massively rooting for Connor this year I feel like he’s a bit of an underdog.
“There’s a lot of dancers on the show this year, he’s never danced in his life, he’s basically me from last year. He even had the stitches on his chin, bless him.
“I genuinely think he can win it but the competition is ridiculous this year. I genuinely wouldn’t stand a chance this year.”
Sonny went on to reveal why he is “jealous” of this year’s celebrity skaters.
He added: “The one thing I was jealous about is that I was part of the audience when I went to go see it the other week.
“When I was there last day year there was no audience at all.”
Asked if watching this year’s show made him ‘want to put his skates back on’, he added: “No – I’ve completed [it].
“I don’t need to skate anymore.”
Sonny beat former Coronation Street star Faye Brookes and sports broadcasting legend Colin Jackson to win Dancing on Ice 2021.
In touching scenes, he also performed a touching tribute skate to the late Capital Breakfast producer Joe Lyons, who died by suicide in August 2020.
Skating to The Temper Trap’s ‘Sweet Disposition’, Sonny moved his fellow contestants and the judges to tears with the emotional tribute skate.
Dancing on Ice airs on Sunday nights on ITV.
