Clelia Murphy is the newest member of BBC’s Doctors cast and will been seen on screens as nurse Maeve Ludlow, but the star has had an extensive career prior to landing her new job.
The actress’ breakout role came in 1996 as Niamh Brennan in Fair City, a position that she held for 22 years before she quit in 2017.
She then competed in the Irish version of Dancing With The Stars two years later, and has recently moved from Dublin to Birmingham to take her new place in the BBC drama series.
Take a look at the star’s career from start to finish as she prepares to enter her new role.
Doctors
Clelia is the new nurse in town on BBC’s medical drama Doctors.
She is introduced with Karen, who shows her character Maeve around Sutton Vale.
Maeve is stressed and viewers soon learn that she is caring for her ill mother and is completely distracted as she receives a number of calls from her.
The nurse soon realises she is being rude to Jimmi and apologises, but admits she may have to quit her new job to care for her mum.
Previously, Clelia had starred as Niamh Brennan in Irish soap opera Fair City from 1996 until 2017.
Her character was involved in many of the show’s intriguing plotlines, including having a relationship with her teacher, having an affair and taking her husband’s money.
Career worries
The actress has admitted that she was worried about her job as an actor during the pandemic.
As with most creatives in the performing arts industries, Clelia was understandably scared that work would dry up during lockdown.
At the time the virus broke out, Clelia was touring round UK theatres with The Sound Of Music, which forced her to return home to Dublin.
Her woes were cemented when shops and recreational activities began to close down and spoke to RSVP Live about the experience.
She said: “I don’t think I’d be qualified to do anything else. I was very worried about my career, I have to be honest with you. My life up to this point has been shallow breathing, particularly up to 2017 when I left Fair City. I have not stopped going.”
Despite her worries, she said that the pandemic gave her “a chance to reflect and slow down”.
Dancing With The Stars
Clelia also competed in Dancing With The Stars back in 2019 and revealed that she enjoyed it so much that she had no intention of quitting dancing, and even vowed to take up lessons once the series came to a close.
The actress told Irish Mirror that she was excited to take up dancing as a hobby as it would be a “personal goal” with no “pressure” attached.
Murphy danced with her partner Vitali Kozmin during the competition and the pair managed to place fifth together.
