EastEnders' Sid Owen recalls moment he called 999 as partner 'almost died giving birth'

EastEnders legend Sid Owen has opened up about the moment he had to dial 999 as his fiancée Victoria Shores almost died during childbirth.

The Ricky Butcher actor appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Monday alongside his partner and baby Skye.

They revealed that Victoria, 42, needed a transfusion before enduring an emergency C-section four weeks early due to a placenta previa diagnosis, where a low-lying placenta covers the cervix.

Victoria woke up in blood-soaked sheets alongside Sid, having suffered a miscarriage only a year prior.

Immediately calling the NHS for an ambulance, they were rushed to hospital.

After discovering her placenta could erupt any second, causing the immediate death of their unborn child, the pair were filled with anxiety and upset.

If Victoria had stayed at home that day, it’s likely she would have haemorrhaged and died, she admitted, adding the hospital staff feared Skye wouldn’t be able to breathe if they took her out too soon.

Speaking to hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid, Sid explained: “I called 999. When she spoke to the emergency services and explained about the amount of blood on the bed, they said it’s not a good sign.”

“It was real tough few days but we got through it.”

Opening up about becoming a dad for the first time at 50, he said: “It’s amazing. I couldn’t stop looking at her for three or four days and crying.”

The arrival of their baby comes a year after the couple suffered a ‘heartbreaking’ miscarriage.

Sharing a picture of himself in scrubs, kissing Victoria, Sid wrote: ‘Been a long a day. But. Can I say. I love you Victoria. Thank you for our baby.

The post was flooded with comments from Sid’s EastEnders co-stars including Patsy Palmer, Dean Gaffney and Danniella Westbrook.
