Elvis and Priscilla's relationship – from meeting when she was 14 to affairs

Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s relationship is one of the main topics in Baz Luhrmann’s latest movie, Elvis, which was released in cinemas in June 2022.

The movie revisits the moment the King of Rock and Roll met his beloved Priscilla when she was just 14, how their relationship blossomed and the birth of their only daughter, Lisa Marie.

Elvis Presley passed away on August 16, 1977, with his ex-wife continuing his legacy by opening their former home, Graceland, to the public, but how did Elvis and Priscilla meet and when did they tie the knot?

Here’s everything you need to know about their relationship.

The rock and roll icon met Priscilla Beaulieu on September 13, 1959, at party in his home in Bad Nauheim, Germany, where he was serving in the US Army.

Priscilla, who was 14 years old the first time she met Elvis, was also based in Germany as her stepfather, Air Force Officer Paul Beaulieu, had been transferred to the European country for work.

The pair were reportedly introduced by Currie Grant, who was a mutual friend of her stepdad and the Heartbreak Hotel singer.

Elvis was 24 years old at the time, and the couple embarked on a six week long whirlwind romance before the singer was transferred back to the US.

During their separation, they penned love notes to each other before they reunited in 1962 after Priscilla’s parents gave her permission to visit the rock icon.

In 1963, Priscilla moved to Memphis to be with Elvis after the singer managed to persuade her parents to agree to the idea.

Elvis promised Priscilla’s family that she would receive the best education that money could buy and that he would financially support her.

Her parents were reluctant at first but when they finally agreed to the plan, Priscilla returned to the States.

However, her parents had strict rules for her to follow, including that she had to attend an all-girls Catholic school to complete her education and that she would move in with Elvis’s parents, Vernon and Dee, until the couple were ready for marriage.

As time went on, Priscilla reportedly spent more time at Graceland and eventually moved in with the rock and roll star.

When did Elvis propose to Priscilla?

Elvis got down on one knee and asked Priscilla to marry him over Christmas in 1966, when she was 22 and he was 32.

The proposal, which took place in the couple’s bedroom at Graceland, saw the singer get down on one knee with a three-and-a-half carat diamond ring.

The couple then went on to tie the knot at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in May 1967, eight years after they first met.

The ceremony lasted for eight minutes and it was witnessed by 14 guests ‒ including Priscilla’s parents and her younger sister, Michelle.

Priscilla said in 2017: “My wedding was very unusual. It was the people closest to us, and private, and that’s how we wanted it. We didn’t want a fan club. We didn’t want a circus. We wanted it to be ours and not have that moment stolen from us.”

The couple then held a second reception at Graceland for those who did not attend the Las Vegas nuptials.

Just nine months after the couple tied the knot, Priscilla and Elvis welcomed their first and only child, Lisa Marie, together.

She was born at 5.01pm on February 1 1968 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee.

Priscilla decided to leave the Hound Dog singer in February 1972 following the star’s infidelity with numerous other women.

By the time Priscilla decided to leave the rock and roll legend, she had already begun an affair with karate instructor, Mike Stone.

Priscilla blamed Elvis’ glitzy lifestyle for the breakdown of their marriage and she later revealed: “He wasn’t faithful, not that he had someone special, but when you’re in the entertainment business there is always that and I tried to turn my back to that, but I just didn’t want to share him.”

Speaking about her own affair, Priscilla wrote in her book Elvis and Me that Elvis encouraged her to train with Mike and that a “deep friendship” developed.

She continued: “I was confronted with the harsh realisation that living the way I had for so long was very unnatural and detrimental to my well-being.

“My relationship with Mike had now developed into an affair.”

Elvis and Priscilla finalised their divorce in August 1972 and the proceedings were surprisingly amicable, with the couple leaving the courthouse hand in hand.

In the divorce proceedings, the couple agreed on a $1.5 million (£1.23m) settlement and shared custody of their daughter.

Just four years after the couple finalised their divorce, Elvis sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack.

Priscilla previously said that the day of Elvis’ death “was the eeriest I had ever experienced. It’s like the world stood still.

She added: “I just couldn’t believe my ears. Not him. He was so much a part of my life in every way.

“He was everything to me. My confidante, my husband, my everything.”
