Emilia Clarke says it’s 'remarkable' she can speak after multiple brain aneurysms

Emilia Clarke thinks it’s “remarkable” she’s even alive after having multiple brain aneurysms.

The 35-year-old actress rose to mainstream fame whilst playing Daenerys Targaryen in all eight series of the hit TV fantasy show Game of Thrones, which aired from 2011 to 2019.

While Emilia became one of the most popular of the show’s stars, there was still a fair bit of drama behind the scenes as she fell seriously ill on two occasions.

But now the actress has appeared on BBC’s Sunday Morning where she opened up on her terrifying ordeal to host Sophie Raworth, explaining how “remarkable” it is she can continue her life relatively normally.

She explained: “It was just the most excruciating pain, huge vomiting, trying to regain consciousness; I kept asking myself all these questions.”

She continued: “I hilariously kept saying lines from the show in my head. If you are throwing up and you have a headache, that is not good for your brain.”

Emilia added: “I was 22 [when she had the first aneurysm] but it was helpful having Game of Thrones to sweep me up and give me that purpose.”

The Last Christmas actress went on to explain more about her condition to emphasise just how lucky she is to not only still be alive but to physically function in a healthy way,

The 35 year-old said: “The amount of my brain that is no longer usable – it’s remarkable that I am able to speak, sometimes articulately, and live my life completely normally with absolutely no repercussions.”

She added: “I am in the really, really, really small minority of people that can survive that.”

The Me Before You star revealed that consultants have revealed her brain scans to her, and she was surprised by the extraordinary results.

Clarke explained: “There’s quite a bit missing, which always makes me laugh! … Because strokes, basically, as soon as any part of your brain doesn’t get blood for a second, it’s gone.”

She added: “And so the blood finds a different route to get around but then whatever bit it’s missing is therefore gone. It kind of shows how little of our brains we actually use.”
