Emmerdale fans seem to have taken a liking to new character Gail Hancock and have begged ITV to keep her in the show.
Nurse Gail appeared in the long-running soap following Marlon Dingle’s recent stroke which saw him rushed to the local hospital.
Since his time in Hotten General, Marlon has struggled with coming to terms with his new way of life and has also had a hard time formulating words as he continues his recovery journey.
But thankfully for Marlon, Gail has helped him to cope with his condition.
Appearing in quite a few episodes since Marlon’s terrifying ordeal, Gail, who is played by actress Elizabeth Boag, has received praise from viewers, with some fans saying they would love to see her as a permanent character in the soap.
Taking to Twitter, viewers shared their thoughts.
One person penned: “I like the Nurse Gail character. Seems like she would be a good character long-term.”
A second tweeted: “Shoutout to @ElizabethBoag who compassionately plays the nurse. It’s easy to forget she’s an actress, not an actual nurse.”
A third chimed: “Gail is a good Nurse! Go the NHS.”
While a fourth said: “Gail needs to stay!”
While others are convinced the pair could end up having an affair.
One Reddit user posted: “Anyone else think these two might end up having an affair as part of Marlon’s rehabilitation?”
Another added: “I just think he will become attached to her, especially the amount of time they’ll spend together grows, and I think Rhona will think he’s being independent and strong when really it’s Gail who’s giving him that support.”
Emmerdale introduced the story of Marlon’s stroke to viewers last month to raise more awareness on the condition.
Working closely with the Stroke Association, Emmerdale’s producers have depicted the realities of what stroke victims and their families face.
Sharing further insight into this, Mark Charnock who plays Marlon said: “Working with Emmerdale‘s research team and the Stroke Association on this storyline has been a total eye-opener for me.
We hear the word ‘stroke’ bandied around a great deal, but being confronted with the sheer weight of numbers in this country alone has been a shock.
“A stroke occurs every 5 minutes in the UK. Over 100,000 a year. More can and should be done to raise awareness and hopefully, this story can help with that.”
Marlon’s unexpected stroke has certainly affected his loved ones as they try their best to adjust to a new normal.
In upcoming scenes, Marlon’s fiancée Rhona Goskirk will end up clashing with her mother Mary as they quarrel over Marlon’s health issues.
Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV at 7.30pm
