Emmerdale icon Frazer Hines has said that he doesn’t think Cain Dingle is as “hard as he makes out” – and the unusual reason why.
Doctor Who star Frazer, who played Joe Sugden from the very first episode of the ITV soap in 1972, revealed that he still watches Emmerdale – more than 30 years since he departed the dales.
Speaking about his favourite moments from recent episodes, the star said: “Oh yes I still watch it now. I loved the Meena story. Paige, she was, gosh she was wonderful.”

He also revealed that Cain Dingle star Jeff Hordley is one of his favourite actors, and the unusual reason why he thinks Cain isn’t such a tough guy after all – despite coming to blows with fellow residents including Al Chapman.
“I like Jeff Hordley, Cain Dingle,” said Frazer.
“I think he’s got a twinkle in his eye. I don’t think he’s as hard as he makes out.”
Frazer, whose character Joe was one of the most familiar faces on the dales until the character was killed off-screen in 1995, recalls his own time on the soap fondly – but recalled being told on his first day of filming.
“My very first memory was when the cast and crew all met up. We had Tristan de Vere Cole, KeithRichardson, and Gordon Fleming and we all came together the night before in this lovely old pub, The Falcon.
“We had lots of wine and it was Keith Richardson who said ‘you do realise we are hereto work’ and we all thought ‘oh sugar’ and we all tiptoed back into our rooms and closed the doors!”
The actor also shared the secret why his character was always eating on screen – he originally used the food to disguise a moment where he had forgotten a line during a take.
However, the improvised moment worked so well, it subsequently became a signature Joe Sugden trait on screen.
Frazer said: “Gordon Fleming was directing a breakfast scene where we were doing a take and I thought ‘what is my line?’ So I stuffed my mouth full and mumbled something.
“Andrew Burt, who played Jack Sugden initially, thought I had given him the line. So we got to the end of the scene and Gordon Fleming came over and put his arm around me and said Frazer, I know you are a Yorkshire lad and I like the reality you know, stuffing it in because you haven’t got manners – I like that, but can I just hear the dialogue properly on the next take.
“So if you are doing an eating scene and you forget your lines, just stuff some food in – marvellous!”
He also said that Emmerdale “changed his life” and brought him “some lovely, lovely friends”, but that he is proud that out of five programmes based in Yorkshire in the 1970s, the beloved soap, which turns 50 on October 16, 2022 is the one still going strong.
“Fifty years ago from the five ITV regions there was Harriet’s Back in Town (Thames TV), CrownCourt (Granada), Marked Personal (Thames TV), Emmerdale Farm (Yorkshire TV) and GeneralHospital (ATV).
“From those five programmes, Emmerdale is still going and that is what I love. I was part of that.
“Myself and Freddie and the gang, we were part of getting that show on the road and here it is fifty years later, still going strong.”
