Emmerdale pays tribute to beloved soap legend after colleague makes poignant statement

Emmerdale viewers were holding back the tears after Thursday night’s episode was dedicated to former director Philip Wood, who died earlier this year.

As the credits rolled after a sweet scene between Cain and Faith Dingle, a title card popped up on screens.

The message read: “Dedicated to Philip Wood”, to pay a poignant tribute to the late director.

Philip wasn’t working on the soap when he died, but worked behind the scenes from 1999 to 2005 and directed 66 episodes.

He also directed episodes of Coronation Street from 2000, working on 22 episodes in total, as well as Channel 4’s Brookside and River City.

The date and circumstances of Philip’s death weren’t revealed in the tribute, but Emmerdale star Liam O’Brien, who plays Ethan Blake, wrote a sweet statement back in April.

He wrote: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Philip Wood a friend of mine from the @emmerdale days, a great character and wonderful director.

“First worked with him on a Brookside workshop in Belfast as a teen only to be directed by him in the farm nearly a decade later. RIP pal.”

Fans took to social media to compliment Emmerdale on the dedication, with one writing: “Well done #emmerdale on beautiful and moving ending last night.”

Another agreed: “We were incredibly touched by [the] BEAUTIFUL script for Cain and Faith. Dedicated to Philip Wood, who was a director of Emmerdale. Absolutely stunning.”

The episode ended between sweet scenes between Faith (Sally Dexter) and her son Cain (Jeff Hordley) as he came to term with Faith’s diagnosis.

Faith has decided to stop all of her cancer treatment after being told that her cancer has returned and she wouldn’t recover.

She and Cain have always had a strained relationship, but fans seemed to love the pair putting their differences to the side as she enjoys her final days.

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV.
