Emmerdale’s Cain ‘replaced’ by younger cast member as Jeff Hordley shares axe fears

It’s all happening in Emmerdale for the festive season, as Cain Dingle’s brother Caleb arrives in the village set to wreak havoc.

Caleb – who was placed into care as a child – will be played by Will Ash, who actually went to school with Cain actor Jeff Hordley and served under the same drama teacher.

But for actor Jeff, fears Cain could be replaced by a ‘younger model’ were rife, and he ended up worrying for the security of his job.

Those fears were only exacerbated by the announcement of a flashback scene, which will see two young actors take on the role of a teenage Cain and Caleb.

Aiden Kane will play Cain, while Riccardo Drayton portrays Caleb in the flashback scenes.

Speaking to Daily Star and other press about the young actors stepping into the shoes of Cain and Caleb, producer Jane Hudson explained: “We have three fantastic actors playing our young Cain, Caleb and Chas.

“Aiden Kane, the actor who plays Cain, actually studied lots of footage of Jeff Hordley and his positions and his poses and how he speaks. It’s incredible when you watch.”

Despite his reservations about being ‘replaced’, Jeff said he wants to “see more” of the talented new cast members.

He explained: “We were lucky enough to get to meet them. They watched us do a scene and we watched them do a scene and they asked us questions.

“The two young actors were absolutely brilliant. I was speaking to Jane and she said, ‘Oh my gosh, the guy who plays young Cain has got all your mannerisms!’

“He’s really studied all my little acting habits or idiosyncrasies – whatever you wanna call them – and they were really good young actors. We need to see more of them!”

But on the arrival of his mystery brother, Jeff was trepidatious.

He explained: “Initially, I’ll be honest, I thought: ‘They are bringing in a younger Dingle? What are they doing that for? Are they trying to replace me?’ You always get a little bit protective of your character if they bring in someone similar.

“Then when I found out it was Will, I was like, ‘Oh, this is great. This is the best thing that could have happened’. I think it feels as if Caleb has been here a long time.”

It turns out Cain already knew about his brother, and had lied to Caleb years ago to throw him off the scent of a family reunion, telling him mum Faith was dead.

He was desperate to keep the secret from Chas and the rest of his family while dealing with his abusive father Shadrach.

Upon learning the news of Faith’s real death after her cancer battle, Caleb returns to the village desperate for answers, and shows up to the prison where his brother is locked up.
