As well as the drama and the chaos that often ensues over Emmerdale, the long-running ITV soap has also become well known for the resident dogs.
From Edna Birch’s famous pooches to the Dingle dog, the pups have been involved in several hard-hitting storylines.
Adding a pinch of disarray to the show, the dogs of Emmerdale often end up in compromising situations with many unfortunately facing heart-breaking deaths.

But throughout the year’s the Emmerdale dogs have become integral members of the show’s cast.
Daily Star has taken a look at some of the most famous pups and where they are now.
Alfie
Up until 2017, the famous Dingle dog Alfie was a member of the Emmerdale cast for 11 years.
Owned by Lynda Woodrow, the dog whose real name was also Alfie retired at her request in the show’s 8007th episode.
Alfie had an integral role in the soap and was tragically poisoned in 2010 after chemicals seeped into the land.
In the same year, Alfie dug up Mark Wylde’s decomposing body in Home Farm Woods when Sam Dingle was taking him for a walk.
In 2017, Zak Dingle accidentally ran over the pooch as he tried to flee angry vegan customers.
But although Alfie managed to survive the accident he was later put to rest when he was diagnosed with cancer.
Batley
Edna Birch’s dog Batley made regular appearances on the ITV soap when he first popped onto the scene in December 2000.
The well known dog spent two years on the soap but had to be put down after Edna’s granddaughter, Eve Jenson, kicked her.
Batley played by pup Bracken suffered a sharp blow to the stomach and Eve had to later admit what she had done to the poor pup.
Batley’s final scenes were a tear jerker and ended up winning a gong for Best Exit at the 2002 British Soap Awards.
Tootsie
Following the death of Batley, Edna decided to look after another dog named Tootsie.
The black and white Papillon first appeared in Emmerdale in 2002 when her previous owner died, and she was taken to veterinary surgeon Paddy.
After much deliberation and knowing that Tootsie could never replace Batley, Edna reluctantly became the owner of Tootsie but quickly grew a bond with the loveable pup.
The original dog who played Tootsie was called Sky but she unfortunately died in 2008, and was replaced by another dog called Dusty.
In the programme Tootsie underwent several rounds of chemotherapy in 2013, but was faced with uncertainty when Edna passed away from cancer in 2016.
Later on, Tootsie went on to live Harriet Finch at Woodbine Cottage.
Tip
In November 2017, Frank Clayton discovered Tip as a stray dog.
But fortunately the dog found a home with businessman Jai Sharma after the Emmerdale residents discovered Megan Macey was allergic to dogs.
The lovable pup was portrayed by Villassa Cherry Ripple but unfortunately he faced tragedy in the show when he was run over by Andrea Tate in January 2020.
Andrea later went on to bury his body in the woods.
Dog
With a unconventional but fitting name, Dog appeared in the ITV soap from 2014 to 2017 and belonged to Lachlan White.
Although he appeared to be a much loved member of the family, Lawrence White sold the dog when the family was due to move to Australia in January 2018.
But once Rebecca White had awakened from her coma she remembered Dog and was also surprised that she had remembered that Dog had been sold.
Clyde
In April 2009, Clyde was found tied up and starving at Mr Merryhew’s farm in April 2009.
At the time Aaron Livesy and Paddy took the dog in after the elderly farmer asked the vet to put the pooch down.
But Aaron appeared to warm to the dog and decided to keep him, much to his mother Chas Dingle’s initial displeasure.
While on the show, Clyde got himself into a spot of bother when he attacked Edna Birch’s dog Tootsie.
He later had to wear a muzzle as a result.
In September 2010 Clyde faced tragedy of his own when he was attacked by a bigger dog.
After losing a lot of blood, Paddy thought it would be best to put the dog down.
Daisy
Daisy was unfortunately abandoned but was luckily adopted by Marlon Dingle and was a gift for Tricia before her tragic 2004 death.
Although everything was going smoothly for the dalmation Ashley Thomas ran over Daisy in 2012, but Paddy was able to save the pooch.
Despite being saved from her first run in with a car, Daisy wasn’t so lucky the second time she was hit by a car three years later when she was hit by Laurel- Marlon’s third wife.
Trying to hide her tracks, Laurel attempted to bury the body, but was caught by Marlon and Cain Dingle with the dead dog.
