Emmerdale’s Gemma Oaten has revealed the harrowing details about the life threatening condition she was recently hospitalised for.
Speaking to Carol Voderman on Lorraine, Gemma explained that she had developed a kidney syndrome that had left her with 8% kidney function. She continued, saying the syndrome came down to “years of taking calcium carbonate”.
Gemma had been suffering with an eating disorder from a young age, as well as anorexia which led to bulimia. She began taking supplements to help with her struggles, such as magnesium, which contains calcium carbonate, to stop her feelings of stress and tiredness.

Known for being being “quite tough,” Gemma’s mum knew something was up when she called complaining about stomach pains and urged her daughter to call 999.
“I said ‘no, it’ll pass’ and rand 111 instead, I had Covid at the time as well,” Gemma continued.
Gemma’s situation escalated and by the time an ambulance had arrived she discovered her the extent of her illness, “My body had been poising itself and I had no idea.”
After being admitted to hospital, Gemma’s calcium levels were “dangerously high,” her kidney function was at 8% and her oxygen levels were as low as 20%.
Despite being well for 15 years, Gemma highlighted how her previous issues have followed her in life.
“I found out I might not be able to have kids even though I’ve been well for 15 years,” she revealed before telling viewers, “I share my story because I don’t want anyone to go through what I am.”
Gemma works closely with Seed, an eating disorder charity, to emphasise the importance of early intervention, “Early intervention is key and vital.”
She continued: “If we don’t have support from charities we’re never doing to get support early enough.”
Addressing the sigma around eating disorders and mental health, Gemma said, “It’s not about vanity and social media, it’s about human beings suffering with pain.”
Out of hospital and back at work, Gemma announced her leading role in ‘Ladies Unleashed’ which she’s set to start rehearsing for in September.
Sharing her excitement, she’s happy to be going “back to her roots.”
