Former Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley dies aged 73 as Hollywood stars pay tribute

Former Vogue editor-at-large and fashion journalist Andre Leon Talley has died aged 73.

The writer passed away in hospital in New York after battling an unspecified illness, a source told TMZ.

TAA PR confirmed the news, saying in a statement: “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear friend and client, the indomitable Andre Leon Talley on January 18, 2022 in New York.”

Andre was a key part of shaping Vogue’s vision and direction during the 1980s and 1990s, and worked with a variety of iconic fashion designers including Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld and Paloma Picasso.

He become Vogue’s news director – a role he held from 1983 to 1987 – before becoming its creative director in 1988 and staying in the position for around seven years.

In his six-decade career Andre also worked at Women’s Wear Daily, and the New York Times.

Andre, through his consulting work, become a stylist for the Obamas for a brief spell during Barack’s presidency.

He also served as a judge on America’s Next Top Model and also had a cameo appearance on Sex and the City.

Celebrities and stars from the fashion world rushed to social media to pay tribute to Andre

Belgian fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg wrote on Instagram: “Good bye darling André … No one saw the world in a more glamorous way than you did … no one was grander and more soulful than you were …the world will be less joyfulI.

“I have loved you and laughed with you for 45 years…. I miss your loud screams …I love you soooo much.”

British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said: “R.I.P dearest Andre. Without you, there would be no me. Thank you for paving the way.”

Tony Award and Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips said Andre was a “trailblazer, dapper gentleman… with a singular voice”.

She added: ‘”His witty repartee , larger than life icon . Always so kind and funny , his contribution to fashion and culture is one for the history books . Such sad news to hear of his passing. Rest In Power Andre. Ms.Vreeland no doubt will be waiting for you at the pearly gates.”

Tyra Banks, who worked alongside Andre on the America’s Next Top Model judging panel, said: “I adored Andre. Before meeting him, I had never experienced such a prolific person serving up a rare mix of fashion ‘fabulousness’ and real down-home southern comfort love.

“Being in his presence was so magical. He made me smile, laugh and was a masterful teacher – a genius historian.

“Scholar, colleague, effervescent spirit, legend…you are resting now, Dearest Andre. But your spirit, your je ne sais quoi, your iconic voice…I hear it now. And will forever. We all will.”

Designer Marc Jacobs said he was “in shock” over the news and added: “You championed me and you have been my friend since my beginning.

“Our chats, the moments we shared … oh my friend. You and your passions were larger than life. I love you and I will miss you dear Andre. Rest In Peace.”

Actress and model Milla Jovovich said Andre was a “force of nature” in a heartfelt tribute.

She added she felt “lucky’” to have encountered him multiple times in her career.

Actresses Kerry Washington, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer also paid tribute, with Washington writing in Instagram: “The whole afterlife is going to be just too fabulous now… You blessed us with your charm and wit and your taste for the exceptional.”
