Friends star Matthew Perry reveals why he dumped secret lover Julia Roberts

Friends actor Matthew Perry has revealed that he once secretly dated Julia Roberts and has also spilled the beans on why he dumped the Pretty Woman star.

Perry, who played Chandler Bing in the iconic show, has detailed his flings with some of the world’s most beautiful ladies in a new book.

He also tells of his cupboard tryst with Gwyneth Paltrow and how he was turned down by co-star Jennifer Aniston but his revelations about a relationship with Roberts have caused the biggest stir.

The story starts when the Hollywood A-lister insisted that she would only appear in the Friends 1995 Super Bowl special episode if she was in a storyline featuring Perry, who is now 53.

He was then advised by the programme’s co-creator to send her flowers and get in touch with her.

“I had to woo her,” he recalled. “I wanted something a tad flirty.

“I sent her three dozen red roses and the card read, ‘The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers’. Her reply was that if I adequately explained quantum physics to her, she’d agree to be on the show.

“I sent her a paper all about wave-particle duality and entanglement, and only some of it was metaphorical. Not only did Julia agree to do the show, but she sent me a gift: Bagels – lots and lots of bagels.”

Saucy faxes were then exchanged on a daily basis before Roberts, who is now 54, turned up on his doorstep.

In his memoir Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing, Perry writes: “Some nights I would find myself at a party sharing a flirtatious exchange with an attractive woman and cut the conversation short so I could race home and see if a new fax had arrived. Nine times out of 10, one had.

The pair were already an item by the time of their Friends storyline

“I was grinning like some 15-year-old on his first date. And we had never even spoken yet, much less met each other.

“Then, early one morning, something changed. Julia’s fax veered on romantic. ‘Call me’, it said, and her phone number was at the bottom.

“After that we couldn’t be stopped: We were falling. That Saturday there was a knock on my door.

“I let her in, both figuratively and literally, and a relationship began. We would already be a couple by the time we started filming.”

The pair went on to celebrate New Year’s Eve 1996 together with Roberts’ family at her New Mexico mountain hideaway.

But, two months later, Perry ended the relationship, explaining: “Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me.

“I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts. I can’t begin to describe the look of confusion on her face.”
