Football star and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker couldn’t resist making a brutal dig at ITV game show The Masked Singer on Saturday, as fans suggested he could be behind one of the masks.
Eagle-eyed fans reckoned the key to Doughnut’s identity lay in the world of sport, as football was mentioned in his introduction – as were crisps.
Gary is well known for appearing in adverts for Walkers Crisps, as well as for his iconic career in football spanning several decades.
Taking to social media, one fan suggested: “Football, crisps, is it Gary Lineker?”
Someone else echoed: “Thought Gary Lineker for Doughnut – walking and eating crisps. Singing sounded nothing like him though.”
“I know he’s a bit prolific but Gary Lineker for Doughnuts? Football… crisps…?” another fan posted.
As a fourth penned: “Doughnuts: @GaryLineker. (No need to thank me) #TheMaskedSinger.”
However, Gary was quick to shut those rumours down, as he snapped back on Twitter: “You’ll never see me on that show… or Strictly, ever.”
One fan cheekily responded to his tweet: “METHINKS THE GENTLEMAN DOTH PROTEST TOO MUCH!” – but Gary simply replied: “Your prerogative!” with a cry-laughing emoji.
Gary’s fellow Twitter users couldn’t resist showering him in further compliments, as one wrote: “PS you’d be good on Strictly!”, as someone else agreed: “I’m not a fan of strictly but if @GaryLineker was on it then I’d be glued to the TV.”
Other fans, however, are sure it’s a different footie star altogether – and think it could be Liverpool FC legend Michael Owen.
One Reddit user suggested: “Pretty sure Doughnuts is Micheal Owen, 150 on the oven… 150 Goals in the Premier League, Jockey… Owns the horse Flaming Rib.”
“Don’t forget Cheese and Owen flavoured Walkers crisps!” another chimed in, as someone else argued: “I think the crisps is too obvious a clue. Maybe one who had a packet named after them like Michael Owen.”
Later in the show, it was Chandelier who succumbed to the judge’s rejection and was sent home on the first night.
When unmasked, it was revealed that iconic British singer Heather Small was underneath the costume, leading to some stunned faces from the judges – who thought she could be Lionfish.
