Gemma Owen's football legend dad Michael leaves UK as she makes Love Island debut

Last night (June 6) saw the latest series of Love Island officially kick off with football star Michael Owen’s daughter, Gemma Owen, entering the Spanish villa.

Although the 42-year-old seemed to be far away from all the action happening on the ITV2 dating show as he left the UK for a trip to Germany.

The former England player jetted off to commemorate the 2001 Germany v England World Cup qualifier match that saw him score a hat-trick.

Despite saying that Gemma entering the Love Island villa was his “worst nightmare”, Michael said he had no doubts his daughter will make them all proud.

International dressage rider Gemma, 19, made her debut on the show on Monday night and viewers noticed she seemed to find it incredibly hard not to reveal who her celebrity dad was.

After being coupled with Liam Llewellyn the pair were getting to know each other when the topic of football came up.

Noticing her knowledge of the sport, Liam asked if she had dated a footballer in the past with her answering “no” before she changed the topic.

Although Gemma landed herself in hot water with viewers who branded her rude after making a comment on Luca Bish’s surname.

Michael may have escaped watching his daughter’s savage comments on Love Island but his fans were quick to fill him in on the antics.

He shared photos from outside the Olympic Stadium in Munich captioning it: “Back at the scene of the crime 21 years later! Germany 1 – 5 England.”

There were some nostalgic fans who took the opportunity to comment on the historic match, however, it wasn’t long before people flooded Michael with messages about Gemma.

One person wrote: “Your daughter is unbelievable.”

Another commented: “Your daughter is fit.”

A third quipped: “I’d leave the country if my daughter was on Love Island too…”

Speaking about his daughter entering the villa in the past, Michael admitted he was “sceptical” about it all.

He told ITV News: “I have no doubts that she will make us all proud.

“It’s probably a father’s worst nightmare, but whatever she wants to do you’ve got to be supportive.”

Michael revealed that the hardest part about Gemma being on Love Island is being away from her family.

He continued: “It’s been different without her in the house. I’ve got other kids and my wife and it’s been quite tough because she’s had to switch her phone off and we’ve had no contact for a couple of weeks so that’s been the hard bit.

“I’ve heard a lot about it. I think old, grumpy men like me will always have an opinion on it because I don’t watch it and you just hear the snippets, but she assures me that it’s not as bad as I think.

“So, we’ll give it a watch and I hope she enjoys herself.”

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
