GMB viewers fume over Richard Madeley's 'snide comment' about New Zealand lockdown rules

Good Morning Britain viewers were left fuming at Richard Madeley’s “snide comment” about New Zealand’s lockdown rules.

The former I’m A Celebrity contestant, 65, appeared on the ITV breakfast show on Monday morning alongside co-host Susanna Reid.

Following a conversation about the latest coronavirus headlines, Richard described New Zealand as “kings of lockdown”, leaving viewers at home fuming.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “No, Richard Madeley, NZ are not the ‘kings of lockdown’ they are the kings of preventing Covid and keeping their population safe and alive.”

A second person: “Richard sneers ‘New Zealand kings of lockdown’ with 53 deaths and less hit economy its New Zealand that’s laughing at you mate.”

Another added: “What is it with Richard Madeley having snide comments about Harry and Meghan and then New Zealand. Don’t let the facts get in the way.”

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern outlined a five-step plan on Thursday that will allow fully vaccinated New Zealand citizens to start traveling from Australia later this month.

They will need to self-isolate on arrival — but they won’t need to go into state-run quarantine facilities.

By July, fully vaccinated people from Australia or visa waiver countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and many European nations, will be able to enter New Zealand and self-isolate on arrival, according to the plan.

The government website states that “self-isolation can be in your home or suitable alternative accommodation,” so it’s not yet known whether non-residents will be able to use hotels, rented apartments or other similar accommodations for their own self-isolation purposes.

Elsewhere in the show, Susanna labelled the government’s handling of education during the pandemic as a “failure”.

The presenter made the comments after it was announced exams would go ahead this year, according to Health Secretary Nadhim Zahawi.

Speaking in the Commons last week Nadhim Zahawi said GCSEs and A levels would “absolutely” take place – after two years of disruption due to the pandemic.

Speaking on the show, Susanna said: “She said: “I was thinking people would say that’s not fair, they’re going to get cheat sheets and be graded more generously but actually what people are saying is it’s unfair you’re making exams go ahead.

“There’s been two years of disruption, some students have had a terrible time at school and not been able to go in because of their own Covid infections, their family’s infections or their teachers haven’t been around.

“I would say the handling of students education in the pandemic has basically been a failure by the government.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
