GMB’s Adil Ray says MPs need to 'give back millions' in furious Ed Miliband clash

Good Morning Britain presenter Adil Ray clashed with Ed Miliband in a heated debate as they discussed how Rishi Sunak’s multi-millionaire wife continues to avoid paying as much tax as UK residents on foreign earnings.

During Thursday’s (April 7) instalment of the popular ITV morning news show, the 47-year-old and his co-host Kate Garraway welcomed the Shadow Chancelor onto the show to share his thoughts on Akshata Murty’s non-domicile status.

It is thought the politician’s millionaire wife is able to save millions of pounds in tax evasion on dividends collected from her family’s IT business empire in Bengaluru, India.

The Labour MP explained how he remains firmly against the non-domicile status and event made moves to remove the business status while he was in power back in 2015.

But the pair locked horns when the presenter pointed out how the Labour party accepted generous donations from Lakshmi Mittal to the party’s future who also takes advantage of his non-domicile status.

Towards the end of their interview, Adil asked: “In that case Mr Miliband, did Labour give Lakshmi Mittal £5million because he donated £5million to the Labour Party in 2010 and he benefits from a non-domicile status.

“So did the curry king Lord Noon, he gave the Labour Party £1million and he only gave up his non-dom status when he was allowed to join the House of Lords.”

He went on: “And so did Sir Ronald Cohen, the Egyptian board businessman who gave £2.55million in donations to Labour and then was appointed Chair of the Social Investment task force.

“Are you going to make sure the Labour Party have given those millions back to those three individuals? There could be more.”

The politician argued: ” Look that’s really a long time in the past” before Adil hit back saying: “It’s not really, it’s 2010. It doesn’t matter if it was a long time in the past.

He pointed out: ” You’ve quoted 2015, you were telling me how you were making changes in 2015. That’s a long time in the past.”

Ed Miliband stated: “Look, that was when I was Labour leader. The key thing now is what is the rules now in relation to non-don status.”

And fans shared their thoughts on the heated debate on social media as they flooded to Twitter to discuss the political debate online.

One user penned: “Ed Miliband has just been set up and taken down on #GMB. See his face switch cos he thought he was in a safe space on this programme.”

Another added: Ed Miliband on @GMB ‘Tories need to give non-rom donations back’. When asked if Labour will re Mittal & Cohen donations, ‘They were a long time ago’. What a f***ing hypocrite #GMB.”

A third penned: “Well don Adil. There shouldn’t be these loopholes for the rich, It’s the unfairness of it all. Perhaps MPs shouldn’t take a pay increase or claim expenses this year. They will never realise what it’s like for those that struggle. We are definitely not all in this together.”

Meanwhile another argued: “What kind of questions are these?! Adil seems to think he’s being really edgy and hard hitting, but he actually just comes across as a right p***k. #gmb #goodmorningbritain.”

As another agreed: “Grow up, Adil. Your over-excitement is ruining a smooth interview. #gmb.”
