Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway left fans confused as she said she didn’t want to shake the hand of a man who received a double arm transplant.
Felix Gretarsson appeared on the programme with his wife on Friday (June 10), to discuss how he is able to use his arms after not being able to hug his daughter for decades.
He was forced to have both limbs amputated after being electrocuted at his job as an electrician, jolted as he touched a live wire after a miscommunication with his colleagues.
The blast threw him 30 feet to the ground.
Now Felix’s own nerves are growing in the donated arms, meaning he is able to lift things, walk his dog and hold hands with his grandchildren.
But Kate caused a stir on the programme as she asked him: “Am I allowed to shake your hand?”
She got up from the desk and told Felix: “I’m nervous to do it, I don’t want to do it, but that is allowed and that’s good, is it?”
It’s possible Kate meant she didn’t want to hurt him by jostling the limb, though she trailed off before she could explain, and enthusiastically shook hands with Felix and his wife Sylwia.
“Oh wow,” Kate said as their hands connected. “That is a fantastic thing for me to do and wonderful that you get to. You’re both brilliant and wonderful, and it’s fascinating to hear your story.”
Felix added that living with no arms was like “being in a bubble”.
He said: “After I lost the arms, it was like you’re in a bubble. You see, you hear, but you never touch anything. And I’m just hugging everybody now!”
Kate’s co-host Ben Shephard chimed in: “A man after my own heart! We do love a hug here.”
“We could talk to you forever,” Kate added.
Fans of the show were left slightly baffled by the segment, especially as Kate asked: “Do they feel like your arms?”
One Twitter user wrote: “Do they feel like your arms? Well done Kate #GMB,” accompanied by an eye-roll emoji.
As another posted: “Kate shook his hand… Here first live on #GMB [eye-roll emoji].”
Others were more supportive of the hosts, as one jubilant user penned: “Kate and Ben are the dream team to end the week on #GMB!”
Someone else gushed: “I like Kate Garraway’s style of dress that she’s wearing this morning.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
