Gogglebox fans in tears as cast sob over powerful Hollyoaks assault episode

Gogglebox fans were in tears as they watched a hard-hitting Hollyoaks episode focused on women’s safety.

The Channel 4 telly-watching show returned on Friday night (November 11) with the couch potatoes reacting to shows like I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, University Challenge and Hollyoaks.

But the latest episode took an emotional turn when the cast tuned into the dark Hollyoaks episode titled The Long Walk Home, which aired on Monday and saw Maxine Minniver (Nikki Sanderson) assaulted.

Gogglebox stars such as Lee Ryan, Jenny Newby, and Peter and Sophie Sandiford and were visibly moved by the tense special episode.

Show newcomer Danielle sobbed as she watched Maxine report the attack to authorities.

She told her best pal Daniella: “A lot of women wouldn’t do that. A lot of women would just be sat at home cowering and crying and leaving it too long.”

Jenny was clearly upset as said: “Oh look at her. Bless her,” before telling Lee: “She’s blaming herself and that’s what happens, Lee. They blame themselves and they don’t need to blame themselves.”

She was referring to Maxine’s character blaming herself for wearing what she considered to be inappropriate or dangerous clothing rather than the male attacker, who was really responsible for the horrific incident.

Fans welled up over the episode too and many flocked to Twitter to praise the soap and Gogglebox for highlighting the issue of women’s safety by airing the episode.

One viewer wrote: “Didn’t expect #gogglebox to make me cry tonight. Thanks for using Maxine’s story from Hollyoaks to shine a light on the fear women face regularly, just for daring to be out on their own. It’s not fair and I’m glad to hear the men recognising their responsibility for change.”

A fourth penned: “I don’t watch Hollyoaks but that was a tough watch when you know exactly how scared she felt. We’ve all been there”
