Good Morning Britain, ITV’s early morning news show, received 71 complaints after comments that were made by Andrew Pierce.
The comments were made by British journalist Andrew Pierce during a recent episode of the show.
The complaints came after Andrew spoke about the UK’s immigration policy.
Pierce stated: “”We’ve got to get to grips with these wretched people crossing the channel.”
However, the word wretched has multiple meanings and it is unclear how Pierce intended his statement to be taken.
Wretched could have meant “unfortunate and unhappy,” while another meaning is “negative and despicable”.
Audiences flocked to social media and complained about Andrew’s use of the term, some of whom accused him of coming close to “hate speech territory”.
One wrote: “Called legal asylum seekers ‘wretched people’. Shocking and vile from the Tory poster boy.”
More claimed that Andrew was “smiling” as he “called refugees wretched” while others urged ITV to remove him from the show.
Another simply wondered why Pierce had been “given a platform to spout this bile”.
GMB presenter Susanna Reid was also recently forced to apologise for a comment made by Pierce after he called Matt Hancock a d******d.
During an episode which aired on 2 November, Andrew made the expletive and Susanna was caught off guard.
Susanna was joined by co-star Ed Balls and spoke of the news that the former health secretary will be taking part in the ITV series I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!
Hancock was suspended from the Tory whip with immediate effect after it had emerged that he had signed up for the show.
Things got heated after Susanna wondered whether she felt sorry for him over the backlash he has received.
Pierce branded the politician as a “d******d” and Reid was left red-faced and forced to apologise.
She told him off and said “he couldn’t say that” before she addressed viewers and apologised for the insult.
However, she need not have apologised to some of the audience who quickly took to social media to agree with the journalist.
Many revelled in the remark and said that Pierce was simply “keeping it real”.
