Good Morning Britain viewers have slammed Richard Madeley for quizzing Iceland’s First Lady about whether she’d pick up a gun to defend her family if she was in the situation of people in Ukraine.
The presenter brought up the question on Tuesday’s show, which saw him and Susanna Reid talking about International Women’s Day with Iceland’s First Lady Eliza Jean Reid.
Richard, 65, was discussing how some women were prepared to use weapons to defend their families amid the Ukraine conflict.
After Eliza said she was a mother, he asked: “So if you weren’t the First Lady of Iceland, but say you were the First Lady of Kyiv, and you were there, presumably you would want them get to a place of safety? Would you be prepared to pick up a gun?”
Looking slightly taken aback, the First Lady said she admired the way the people of Ukraine were defending the country but that it was a “difficult, hypothetical” question as she wasn’t in that situation.
Several viewers were unimpressed, with some highlighting that Richard had a similar chat with Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko in a previous instalment of the ITV show.
One posted on Twitter: “There are topics that are just too big for Richard Madeley to report on… He really has the subtlety of a brick in his questioning.”
“He’s an embarrassment and you can see Susanna is mortified,” claimed another.
“Absolutely obsessed to ask everyone if they’d pick up a gun and kill someone.”
“Richard Madeley being shut down by Susanna, asking the first lady of Iceland how many kids she has & if she’d pick up a gun and kill someone if it came to it, he’s obsessed!” another viewer tweeted.
“Susanna wanted to talk about the trafficking of women & child refugees & he brings it down to that!”
Another said that the TV star was being “patronising”.
