Comedian Trevor Noah is best known for hosting the popular US TV show The Daily Show but is also the starring host of this years Grammy Award’s 2022.
Last year, the South African-born hosted the first ever swanky red carpet gig during the COVID-19 pandemic with the production taking place in semi-outdoor location.
While there were traditional performances and awards, the set up was completely different with a rotating audience and presenters.
This year however, it’s business as usual – although the date had been pushed back from it’s original Jan 31 date.
With much anticipation and build-up for the big event, Daily Star couldn’t help but want to know more about the host of this year’s Grammy Awards.
From botched surgery, a Kanye West feud, a near death experience and a famous girlfriend, we have it all.
Botched Surgery Lawsuit
In 2021 it was reported that the Grammy host was suing an orthopaedic surgeon and New York City hospital for negligence, following surgery he’d had the year prior.
According to Page Six, Trevor claimed that the hospital and doctor were “careless in failing to treat and care for [him] in a careful manner.”
The TV star has also alleged that the parties involved failed to carry out “proper tests and examination in order to diagnose the conditions,” that he had suffered from.
He accused them of failing to meet the approved standards and treatment of care for the surgery he underwent at the hospital on November 23, 2020.
A representative denied the allegations of wrongdoing in a statement to Us magazine.
The lawsuit is ongoing.
On/off girlfriend Minka Kelly
While The Daily Show host and actress Minka Kelly have reportedly been linked to one another for some time, they tend to keep their private affairs out of the pubic eye.
It was reported that the pair hunkered down in lockdown together and then later parted ways in May 2021 after “work commitments” forced them to separate.
In June 2021, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Minka and Trevor were trying to patch things up after a vacation to St. Barts.
The source said: “Trevor and Minka are taking things day by day. They’re spending more time together and are both happy.
“Their feelings for each other never really went away and after taking some space, they realised they missed each other.”
The successful actress who has played Jackie Kennedy and also a Charlie’s Angel, went public with their romance for the first time in January 2022.
Joining Trevor on a family holiday to his native home in South Africa, she shared a happy snap as the sun began to set.
She penned: “Take a trip to South Africa. Find friends like these. Have the holiday of a lifetime. Thank you, Mzansi.”
Kanye West feud
The rift between the rapper and comedian rages on after Noah criticised Kanye on an episode of The Daily Show over social media posts relating to his ex-wife Kim Kardashian.
He said: “What she’s going through is terrifying to watch … What we’re seeing is one of the most powerful, one of the richest women in the world, unable to get her ex to stop texting her, to stop chasing after her, to stop harassing her.”
This was met with a response from the furious hitmaker who changed the famous lyrics to Kumbaya to “k*** baya my lord”.
Kanye was banned from Instagram for 24 hours for using the racial slur to describe Trevor.
The Flashing lights artist was also given the boot from performing at the Grammy Awards this year for his “concerning online behaviour”.
As host of the swanky red carpet event, Trevor explained to CNN that he had nothing to do with Kanye being pulled from the schedule.
The comedian also took to Twitter to address Kanye’s Grammy’s ban, writing: “I said counsel Kanye not cancel Kanye.”
This post has since been deleted from Trevor’s feed.
Frightening plane incident
The television personality opened up about a frightful ordeal he’d suffered while on-board a flight to Toronto, Canada.
He was due to attend an event for the Islamic Relief at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre but had to cancel his attendance at last minute, due to bad weather.
As the weather worsened, the flight was unable to land and the TV host explained that he was left “praying” for his life.
Re-evaluating his life after the frightening ordeal, Trevor penned on Twitter: “Few things in life give you more clarity than your flight being unable to land because of bad weather.
“Pilot couldn’t land in Toronto, everyone on the plane starts praying and I think about all the things I should have done in life…
“More walks, less internet.”
Slammed for defending Will Smith
The Grammy Award host was slammed recently by fans for posing for a happy snap with actor Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars – after the King Richard star had slapped comedian Chris Rock.
Chris had cracked a GI Jane joke about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, who boasted a shaved head after suffering from alopecia.
Angered by the quip, Will waltzed on stage and cuffed Chris across the face before returning to his seat.
Will has since publicly apologised to Chris on social media and has resigned from the academy as a result of his actions after widespread outrage.
Some fans were annoyed that Trevor had seemingly stood by Will when he had condemned Kanye.
A Reddit user wrote: “Trevor Noah picks and chooses who he calls out for abusing people. AND Will Smith isn’t one of them.”
A slew of others agreed, with one person penning: “It’s because it didn’t directly affect him.”
Another wrote: “The public double standards are annoying.”
