Gyles Brandreth calls Meghan Markle's curtsy recreation 'mocking' and 'embarrassing'

Gyles Brandreth has shared his reaction to Meghan Markle’s curtsy scene in the Harry & Meghan Netflix documentary.

Gyles, a close pal of the Royal Family, slammed the recreation made in the show as “mocking” and “embarrassing” while speaking on Vanessa Feltz’s Drivetime show on TalkTV.

In the scene, Meghan, 41, and Prince Harry, 38, were interviewed on the sofa at their mansion in California as the duo shared their experiences over the last six years.

Meghan admitted in the Netflix series that she thought the idea of curtsying to a Royal was “medieval” and put on a funny accent while gesturing the action.

She also insisted Americans “would understand” where she was coming from.

On the curtsy, Gyles said: “It’s embarrassing because it is mocking and nobody curtsies to the Queen like that, and nobody would have advised her to do it that way.

“Prince Harry always spoke with huge respect and love for his grandmother and always acknowledged that she had several roles in his life.

“He usually said she was the first Queen and Commanding Officer. He always said that first and then ‘Granny’.”

He added: “He would know that the bow, as it were, is a brief nod and the curtsy is to show respect for the sovereign, and in the case of the Queen – a lady in her 90s who actually had earned respect through a lifetime of service, and that was it.

“To do this sort of mocking thing is uncomfortable, but it is a cultural difference. It’s like you would do a curtsy if you were playing in Snow White.”

Friend of the royals Gyles also revealed that King Charles III is unlikely to watch Harry & Meghan as he doesn’t watch “very much television.”

The author said that while the documentary series is “interesting,” he doesn’t believe it is “alarming” or will have any lasting impact on the Royal Family’s position or the monarchy itself.

It comes as tensions between Netflix and the Royal Family heightened over whether or not Buckingham Palace offices for King Charles III and Prince William were contacted before the documentary was released.
