Half of Justin Bieber's face paralysed by rare syndrome that's 'pretty serious'

Popstar Justin Bieber has revealed that he has a medical condition that has caused paralysis in half of his face.

The 28-year-old singer has already had to cancel shows on his Justice World Tour due to the condition called Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

On Instagram, he gave fans an update on the condition, providing a reason for the cancellations.

The Baby star said: “Hey everyone Justin here, I wanted to update you guys on what’s been going on.

“Obviously as you can probably see with my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it is from this virus that attacks the nerves in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis.”

He said, “obviously my body is telling me I’ve got to slow down”, and added that the condition is “pretty serious”.

During the clip, he tried to give a blink and a smile but was unable to do so. He even tried to flare the nostril on that side of his face, but again couldn’t.

Addressing the disappointment of fans who were heading to the shows, he said: “So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically obviously not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious, as you can see, I wish this wasn’t the case.

“But obviously my body is telling me I’ve got to slow down and I hope you guys understand.”

Before the latest video, Bieber had said that he was having to cancel some shows in the 130-date tour for “non-Covid related illness.”

Writing at the time, he said: “Can’t believe I’m saying this. I’ve done everything to get better but my sickness is getting worse.

“My heart breaks that I will have to postpone these next few shows (doctors orders). To all my people I love you so much and I’m gonna rest and get better.”

Vowing to work himself back into full health, he said he was doing facial workouts to try and regain feeling.

Shingles that affect facial nerves near the ear are the cause of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which in turn can cause hearing loss in the affected ear and facial paralysis.

It is caused by the same virus behind chickenpox, which can remain dormant in your nervous system before breaking out at a later date.

Complications can occur from Ramsay Hunt syndrome and quick medical attention and treatment are needed to limit the risk.

According to Mayo Clinic, risks can include the permanent weakening of facial muscles and loss of hearing although for most people symptoms are temporary.
