Hollyoaks star Gregory Finnegan has teased that James Nightingale could be leaving the village imminently.
The 47-year-old actor has played the scheming lawyer in the Channel 4 soap since 2016.
Over the years, James has been involved in plenty of dramatic storylines including a historical abuse storyline with his father Mac Nightingale (David Easter).
However, fans are set to witness James spiral out of control as he continues to use gambling as a misguided escape from his feelings of grief following the death of his beloved mother Marnie Nightingale.
Things go from bad to worse for the villager when he loses Marine’s inheritance, causing a huge family rift.
Speaking to Daily Star, Gregory explained :”He really does press the nuclear button and it’s going to get worse for him and more dramatic.
“He’s going to break everything around him and I think we’re going to see him at the lowest we’ve ever seen him in the village, to the point where he may not even be in the village anymore.
“I love playing the character and we’ll have to see if it continues.”
In upcoming scenes, James arrives at the casino with Luis, the sex worker who recently spent the night with John Paul McQueen (James Sutton).
Luis seems concerned about James’s behaviour, but there’s seemingly no talking him round.
As his luck has recently started to run out, this could all end in disaster if the outcome doesn’t go his way.
The soap star said: “These new characters James meets are on the seedier side and there’s a bit of darkness going on there.
“He’s carousing with prostitutes and all sorts so it’s fun stuff to film but tragic to watch.
“James basically doesn’t care anymore. All of his family ties are sort of shredded and he’s just on a one-man mission to destroy his life and let the coin decide.
“He’s just being completely reckless. Without Marnie, the wheels have come off. We’ve seen this before with James but this is the real low.”

Hollyoaks have worked alongside charity GamCare for their latest hard-hitting storyline.
Gregory said: “There is an enormous amount of responsibility to tell a real story, and one that people can understand, but also one that can help people and teach people where help may be.
“The team have been working closely with GamCare and hopefully this story can help and educate.”
Fiona Macleod, Director of Clinical and Communities, at GamCare added: “We have worked closely with scriptwriters at Hollyoaks to ensure James’s story is as clear and as accurate as possible.
“It is important to raise awareness of how gambling can harm people and we hope James’s experiences will help to do that.
“The challenges that James’s character is facing affect so many of those who reach out to our helpline for support, from relationship breakdowns and financial difficulties, to a feeling of being alone or mental health concerns.
“Anxiety and stress were the most common health impacts for those calling the National Gambling Helpline last year.
“We are here for you around the clock, whether you need help yourself or you’re affected by someone else’s gambling.
“If anything here seems familiar we would urge you to get in contact our helpline to get free confidential help and support from a trained Adviser.”
Gregory also let slip that fans can expect more James and John Paul scenes very soon.
He teased: “I’ve been filming a lot of stuff with James (Sutton, who plays John Paul McQueen).
“The characters are going to be involved together, not necessarily romantically.
“John Paul is going through his own issues so you’re going to have the gambler and the alcoholic together for a little while in full distraction mode.
“We’re filming all that stuff at the moment. I love working with James and it will be good to delve into their dark pasts.”
Hollyoaks airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 6.30pm followed by first look episodes on E4 at 7pm
