He’s famous to Home and Away fans for his role as heartthrob Tane Parata – but what does actor Ethan Browne’s life look like away from Summer Bay?
The 30-year-old New Zealander made his TV debut as Tane in February 2020, joining on-screen brother Ari Parata and nephew Nikau as the soap’s new Māori family.
A dramatic upcoming plot will see the character’s life hanging in the balance after a stabbing – but luckily actor Ethan’s real life is a quieter affair, although it does have some twists and turns worthy of a soap storyline.
From impressive hidden talents in music and martial arts to a huge career change, here’s everything we know about the actor.
Becoming a teen dad
Ethan became a father aged 16 to daughter Aaylah, and often shares sweet snaps on his Instagram page showing their close bond.
The actor captioned a photo of him holding his daughter at the aquarium to mark her 13th birthday: “Everything I do is for you, and I will forever love you and protect you.”
The pandemic meant that Ethan had to go almost a year without seeing Aaylah in person, and he posted an emotional video of the moment they reunited.
“A moment I have dreamed and fantasised about for so long. I can’t articulate how tough this stretch has been,” the star wrote alongside the clip of him hugging his daughter.
Family is a big part of Ethan’s life, and he often expresses love for his siblings over on Instagram.
Back in 2020 he was sadly unable to fly back to New Zealand to attend his sister’s wedding due to Covid restrictions – but still made sure to see the whole thing over FaceTime.
Passion for music
Acting isn’t Ethan’s only creative skill – having grown up in a musical family, he plays more than one instrument and originally considered following a career in music.
Ethan began playing both the guitar and the drums from the age of 13, and throughout high school he was a member of several bands.
He may have ended up venturing into acting instead, but music is still a part of Ethan’s life – he still shares clips on Instagram of drumming sessions.
Martial arts talent
Ethan loved to watch films when he was little, but they didn’t just inspire him to become an actor – his favourite genre also led to him developing an interest in martial arts.
After putting in practice play-wrestling his siblings in the back garden, Ethan went on to train in karate and taekwondo, earning himself a black belt.
He still enjoys dabbling in various martial arts styles, sharing regular updates from training sessions on his Instagram page.
Different career path
As if Ethan didn’t already have enough going for him, he has yet another secret talent under his belt which almost saw him pursue a very different career.
Despite growing up with a dream to pursue acting, Ethan admitted that it was difficult to follow his aspirations in his hometown of Wairoa which was “dominated by rugby culture”.
“I wanted to do [acting] in high school but it was frowned upon by the boys, that sort of culture, it wasn’t the tough masculine thing to do,” he told the Daily Telegraph.
Ethan’s priorities shifted after welcoming his daughter at a young age and he went on to study civil engineering to make sure he could provide for her.
Ethan moved from his home of New Zealand to Brisbane after receiving his diploma to work as a civil draughtsman – but unsatisfied with his job, he decided he wasn’t ready to give up on his dream and took up acting classes in his 20s.
He was later accepted into the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, and the rest is history.
