Sue Cleaver has told how a chance meeting at a theatre audition meant she was reunited with her birth mother – more than 20 years after she was adopted.
While appearing on ITV reality show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Coronation Street star Sue explained to her campmates about the crazy encounter.
She explained: “It was when I was at drama school, I was about 22/24 and Royal Exchange were looking for little tiny parts for Oedipus.”

Sue, 59, explained when she walked in an actor said: “Oh my god, she’s the absolute double of my wife when I met her.”
He then asked Sue her date of birth. Sue explained he then asked: “‘Oh, so where were you born?’” Sue continued: “And I went, ‘Barnet.’ He rung his wife and he said, ‘I’ve found her.’”
Scarlette Douglas reacted: “What!”
And footballer Jill Scott added: “Nah, that has just given me goosebumps!”
Babatúndé Aleshe said: “That’s spooky! That’s mad.”
Sue continued: “It’s uncanny and I’ve got two half sisters who are all in the business.”
Jill said: “That is the most incredible story I think I’ve ever heard.”
Sue said: “It’s lovely because my mum and my birth mother, we’ve all met, been out for dinner, we’ve all kept in touch, so we’ve all had a lovely relationship ever since, so it’s a nice ending. I’m very lucky.”
She studied at the Manchester Metropolitan School of Theatre and her first television appearance was a small part in an episode of A Touch of Frost. She has been in Corrie since 2000 playing Eileen Grimshaw.
Sue tends to keep her private life on the down-low, but has spoken at length about her ITV co-star husband.
She is married to Brian Owen, a lighting technician on the network.
Her previous husband was actor James Quinn – who has appeared in Coronation Street alongside Sue – but the pair divorced in 2003.
The pair are still pals, and put on a play together in 2009 called Marriages Made in Heaven.
Speaking to Manchester Evening News about the role, James said: “It’s quite funny to be doing this with Sue. Although we got divorced, we get on well, but we haven’t acted together on stage since we first met in a play in 1991.”
I’m A Celebrity airs on ITV and ITV Hub
