Inside Corrie original Summer's life – sexuality, ITV soap exit and glam transformation

In upcoming Coronation Street scenes, Summer Spellman is found slumped on the bench unconscious next to boxes full of alcopops.

Police find her and assume her to be drunk and take her down to the station.

Amy Barllow (Elle Mulvaney) and Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain) call at the police station and tell Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) about Summer’s arrest and how they suspect she might be suffering from her diabetes.

Craig hurries to the cells where he finds Summer in a diabetic coma, before shouting out for someone to call an ambulance.

Will they get to Summer to hospital in time or will it be too late?

Summer is currently played by Harriet Bibby, but before she took on the role the character was portrayed by actress Matilda Freeman.

Amid Summer’s big storyline in Corrie, Daily Star have taken a look into Matilda’s life.

Matilda, who joined the Corrie cast in 2017, was born in Chester on August 31, 2004 – which makes her 17 years of age as of April 2022.

She made her TV debut when she played the role of a character called Esther in a programme called Dropperz – at the time she was just 12.

Also when she was 12 she appeared as Livia in a short film titled Lifeline.

And a year later she popped up in rival BBC soap Doctors as Chantelle Briggs.

Matilda was a much-loved actress when she appeared on Corrie until 2020, and fans loved her portraying the role of young and innocent Summer.

Her last Corrie appearance was aired in August 2020, and at the time of announcing her departure Matilda took to Instagram.

When she left the soap she took to Instagram to tell her fans that the reason behind her leaving the soap opera was so she was “able to work on other shows/films/projects”.

At the time she said: “When you work at Corrie you’re under a contract which means you can’t work on anything else while you’re there – so it was quite limiting.”

She also said at the time: “I’d like to say thank you to my second family, the cast, crew and viewers who have supported me during my time on the cobbles.

She took to social media to give more information about her move, while also praising her castmates Daniel Brocklebank, who plays vicar Billy, Bruno Langley, who previously played Todd, and Peter Ash who plays Billy’s partner Paul Foreman.

Matilda wrote: “After more than 3 years in Weatherfield I said goodbye to the cobbles in August. I’ve had the best family @Dan_Brocklebank @BrunoLangley @PeterAsh_85 and will miss them and so many of the cast and crew x.”

Summer was written out of the soap for a short while with the storyline being that she went to stay with her nan, but it wasn’t long before she returned with Harriet Bibby playing the role.

Coming out as bisexual

The teen came out as bisexual

In June 2021, Matilda came out as bisexual during an Instagram Q&A.

She was asked by a fan about how she identifies when it comes to sexuality.

Matilda simply penned: “I’m bisexual,” alongside a heart emoji.

Fans were quick to support the young star and found her candid answer incredibly positive.

Thanking her fans and followers for their support Matilda said: “Can I just say – thank you for all the love and support I’ve received after making my sexuality aware on my socials.

“I really wasn’t expecting it and it means the absolute world, you guys are amazing. I love you all.”

More recently, just the other day Matilda shared a snap on Instagram of herself holding a mug that said: “love is love”.

Glam transformation

Matilda looks a far cry from her days as Summer Spellman

When Matilda portrayed Summer in Corrie from 2017 until 2020, she was still very young and fresh faced.

But since leaving the cobbled streets she has really found her true self, identity and personal style.

She has uploaded and deleted a fair amount of snaps on Instagram in the past, showing herself looking more grown up and totally different from Summer.

With makeup on and her hair styled in different ways, Matilda looks ultra glam and super chic.

Since her stint in Corrie, Matilda has starred as a Teenage Lin in the popular BBC sitcom Alma’s Not Normal – which is now available to watch on iPlayer.

The gripping series follows the eponymous Alma as she tries to give her life meaning while coping with the strained relationships of her family that saw her spend time in care.

The series is written by and stars Sophie Willan and is inspired by her own experiences of the care system.

She is also due to star in The Power, a new TV series, as Leila. This is currently in post-production.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV at 8pm
