Rebel Wilson, who took the stage on March 13 as the host of the BAFTAs, has been on an inspiring health kick since 2020.
The comedy actress, who first found fame as Fat Amy in 2012 movie Pitch Perfect, went on to have hilarious roles in How to be Single, The Hustle and Isn’t It Romantic as well as two more Pitch Perfect films.
Wilson, who managed to lose 5.5 stone, even poked fun at her weight loss at the BAFTAs saying: “It’s going to be so much fun! I don’t wanna put any pressure on this – I know I’m not going to be funny because I am no longer fat.”
Here’s everything you need to know about Rebel Wilson’s transformation, how she did it and the reasons behind her weight loss.
How did Rebel Wilson lose weight?
Rebel Wilson revealed that her size was one of the factors behind pursuing a career in comedy. She said most comedians “often have something physical about them that’s abnormal.”
She explained: “Those people tend to go better in comedy, so I turned what was turned into a lot of agents as a disadvantage into my advantage.”
Rebel who has previously also spoken of how she suffered from “emotionally eating,” said that she realised that she was turning to food whenever times got tough.
She spoke on Drew Barrymore’s talk show, Drew, saying: “I was going all around the world, jet setting everywhere and eating a ton of sugar that was kind of my vice.
“I think what I mainly suffered from was emotional eating and dealing with the stress of becoming famous internationally. There is a lot of stress that comes with it and I guess my way of dealing with it was just like eating donuts.”
The actress switched from consuming up to 3,000 calories “most days” to a high protein diet of fish and chicken breast. However, she allowed herself cheat days with an aim for an overall “healthy balance”.
As part of her weight loss journey, Wilson attended a health-orientated retreat in Austria. According to her, the retreat helped in flushing “out every toxic substance possible in all sorts of crazy ways.”
In terms of exercise, Wilson focused on moderate walking, which “doesn’t have to be high-intensity, doesn’t have to be uphill, just moderate walking an hour a day.”
She would also often head out with trainer Gunnar Peterson and listen to uplifting motivational podcasts to keep up her motivation.
Why did Rebel Wilson want to lose weight?
Rebel Wilson revealed in January this year that she began gaining weight in her 20s after she was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).
The actress has been explained that the reason she decided to lose weight was mainly due to her health. She said that a doctor told her that losing excess weight would be the best way for her to improve her chances of becoming a mother
She explained: “When I was going through and looking into fertility stuff, the doctor was like, ‘Well, you’d have a much better chance if you were healthier’.”
In an Instagram live, the comic admitted that she was “actually a bit offended,” by the doctor’s statement but that she decided to kickstart her transformation, adding: “At first it wasn’t even for myself, it was thinking of a future mini-me and their quality.”
After having lost over five stone, Wilson has said: “What I was doing was to improve my overall health and to improve my whole lifestyle to make me a happier, healthier person.”
She added that she loves her curves and doesn’t think she’ll “ever go too skinny.”
