Johnny Depp and Amber Heard legal battle to be 'televised trial of the century'

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are set to star in the TV trial of the century.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star is suing his ex-wife for £37million in a bid to prove she lied about suffering domestic abuse at his hands.

A judge has ruled the month-long trial – due to start in the US on April 11 – can be televised.

Due to the extreme nature of some of the allegations Judge Penney S Azcarate announced there will be restrictions on what can be broadcast.

She will use her discretion over how much footage can be screened of the hearing in Virginia. “It will be a tight leash,’’ she said.

Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, said Heard was a liar whose claims, including sexual allegations, were false and outrageous,
adding that the A-lister favoured transparency.

The ruling went viral with Depp fans claiming it will be the “trial of the century” on social messaging sites.

The 58-year-old actor is suing Heard, 35, for defamation, insisting her claims were false and wrecked his career and cost him his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates Of The Caribbean films.

Heard has filed a counterclaim seeking £74million and alleges in court documents that Depp “threatened to kill her”.

The High Court in London in 2020 ruled the actor had assaulted Heard 12 times during their stormy relationship – leaving her “in fear of her life” on three occasions. The couple’s 15-month marriage ended in divorce in 2017.

It comes as Amber is celebrating landing the lead role in Conor Allyn’s new film, In the Fire.

She will play an American psychiatrist named Grace Victoria Burnham in the period flick, set in the 19th century and centring around a farming family worried their son is possessed by a demon.

Amber celebrated the news on Twitter, writing: “I’m so excited to be working on this movie!!” and retweeting a link to the Variety article with the details.

Her fans immediately hopped into the comments section to praise the star’s acting skills, with one writing: “BOOKED AND BUSY!!!! so so so proud of you queen. Can’t wait to meet Grace Victoria.”

“So excited to see it! We will be buying tickets!” another gushed.
