Johnny Depp is one of the most easily recognised names globally with hordes of adoring fans who want to know his every move.
Having risen to the dizzy heights of fame in the 1980s with a string of successful Hollywood movies following his TV stint in series 21 Jump Street he has rarely been off our screens for four decades.
However, it’s not just his movie career that has caught attention over the years with his love life also being a hot talking point thanks to his fair share of high profile romances that were thrust into the public eye.
While his troubled relationship with Amber Heard may have become Johnny’s most notorious coupling, he was the subject of adoration from the general public throughout several of his other past relationships.
Lori Anne Allison
Lori was a key figure in Johnny finding fame thanks to her friendship with Nicolas Cage who helped him get his big Hollywood break in classic 1984 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Johnny was just 20 years old when he tied the knot with makeup artist Lori, who was the sister of one of his bandmates at the time.
Their marriage ended in divorce two years later in 1985.
Jennifer Grey
Dirty Dancing star Jennifer was Johnny’s next big love with him popping the question to her in the late 1980s.
However, they didn’t quite make it down the aisle with the couple ending their relationship shortly after he proposed leaving Johnny a single man again and ready to meet his next girlfriend and embark upon arguably his most famous relationship pre-Amber.
Winona Ryder
When Johnny met Winona for the first time at the 1989 premiere of Great Balls Of Fire she was just 17-years-old.
The pair embarked upon one of the most talked-about relationships of the 90s with their 1990 co-star roles in hit movie Edward Scissorhands cementing them as an iconic duo in Hollywood.
Johnny proposed to Winona and was inked with his infamous “Winona Forever” tattoo on his arm.
However, things didn’t go to plan and the couple split in 1993 before they ever made it to wedded bliss.
Johnny then notoriously had his tattoo changed to read “Wino Forever” as the couple went their separate ways.
In 2009 Winona reflected on the split in a chat with Elle magazine where she admitted it was her “first real breakup, the first heartbreak.”
Kate Moss
Johnny and supermodel Kate first met in 1994 and embarked upon a four-year relationship that had its own controversial moments as the couple found themselves constantly in the headlines.
An incident occurred when Johnny was arrested after the pair allegedly trashed their hotel room at the Mark Hotel in New York City with police reportedly arriving at the scene to find them sitting amongst the debris.
Their eventual break-up led to years of mourning the loss of the romance for Kate as she explained in a 2012 interview with Vanity Fair.
She said: “There’s nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. Like if I said, ‘What do I do?,’ he’d tell me. And that’s what I missed when I left. I really lost the gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!”
Ellen Barkin
Johnny was briefly involved with Dinner actress Ellen Barkin in 1998 and the couple appeared in public together several times before eventually calling it quits after their brief romance fizzled out.
Ellen went on to call the actor “demanding” and “controlling” as well as “a jealous man” in her November 2019 deposition that became part of the defamation trial against Heard.
Vanessa Paradis
Johnny and Vanessa had a true romance that lasted over 14 years and saw them become parents to two children – daughter Lily-Rose in 1999 and son, Jack, in 2002.
While his relationship with French model and actress Vanessa was his longest, the pair never got married which he later explained during the last years of their relationship in 2010.
He said: “I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, okay you’re married. … If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not. But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name. She’s got such a good last name.”
In 2013 Johnny talked about the difficulties of their breakup during an interview with Rolling Stone.
He said: “It wasn’t easy on Vanessa. It wasn’t easy on me. It wasn’t easy on the kids. It doesn’t stop the fact that you care for that person, and they’re the mother of your kids, and you’ll always know each other, and you’re always gonna be in each other’s lives because of those kids. You might as well make the best of it.”
Amber Heard
Amber and Johnny first met while filming The Rum Diary in 2009, but didn’t start dating until around the same time his relationship with Vanessa ended in early 2012.
By 2014 the pair were engaged and in 2015 they decided to get married, however, the union was short-lived with Amber filing for divorce just 15 months later.
The pair have been embroiled in a row over allegations of domestic abuse and defamation ever since with Johnny finding himself subject of her now infamous Washington Post op ed in 2018.
The actor sued his ex-wife for defamation and on June 1 2022 a jury found in his favour and awarded the actor $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages for the claims made against him by Amber.
Heard meanwhile was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages for one statement of her counter claim against Depp.
