Judge Rob Rinder has shared moving photos of the moment he met his Strictly partner’s elderly relatives at the Ukraine border.
The star – a barrister as well as a TV personality – announced earlier this month that he was heading to the Polish border to help Ukrainian dancer Oksana Platero’s grandparents amid the ongoing crisis.
He later updated fans to say that Oksana’s 95-year-old grandmother had spent a week trying to flee the shelling and that she eventually made it into Poland with no wheelchair, food or medical supplies.
Rob, 43, has now tweeted an emotional snap of him hugging Oksana’s gran, along with one of him and the dancer’s aunt.
“Oksana’s family: Auntie Lidya and Grandma Zoya,” he wrote.
“We managed to reach them this morning with a wheelchair & some medical supplies.
“Despite having nearly nothing… they are ‘grateful for everything’.”
Rob travelled to the border after Oksana, whom he danced with on the 14th series of Strictly in 2016, said on Instagram that some of her other relatives were trying to escape.
He told his social media followers: “Oksana Platero my Ukrainian dance partner on @bbcstrictly gifted me so much.
“Right now her grandparents are a week into their struggle to find sanctuary in a safe country.
“I’ll be trying to meet them on the border next week.
“They’re just a few of the millions who need us.”
After Rob located Oksana’s family, Oksana told Good Morning Britain: “They are now safe in a south west village in Poland and Rob is working on getting them the medication that they need.”
She added that she was “very grateful”.
