This years category had fierce competition with last year’s winner Kate Garraway in the running once again.
She has now won the award for the same documentary two years running.
Katie Price, Julia Bradbury, Paddy and Christine McGuinness and the late Tom Parker were all also in the running for the award.
Kate’s personal story Finding Derek, which aired on ITV, dealt with her husband suffering from long Covid and being placed into a coma.
Tom Parker’s story was an emotional one, he was nominated for his Channel 4 documentary Inside My Head. Tom, from boyband The Wanted, was diagnosed with a brain tumour last October at the age of 32-years-old.
In the documentary Tom, Kelsey and their children, two-year-old daughter Aurelia and seven-month-old son Bodhi invited the cameras into their lives as they look to make every future moment count.
Tom sadly passed away in March this year.
Julia Bradbury’s ITV documentary named Breast Cancer and Me focused on her battle with breast cancer and how she prepared for her potentially life-saving single mastectomy.
Another BBC documentary was Katie Price’s Harvey and Me which was also nominated at last years awards.
It saw the reality star and former glamour model share an important stage in her son’s life as he was about to turn 18.
The final nomination was Paddy and Christine McGuinness’s BBC’s documentary on Our Family and Autism.
It shows how they have dealt with their three children who have all been diagnosed with autism.
Speaking of her attendance at the event, Kate told Daily Star: “Well, there are some mixed emotions in some ways, because obviously you didn’t want to be in a position to have a story like this to tell.
“But because the focus was on caring for Derek, the fight he’s gone through and all the wonderful people all over the country who have to care for those who they love, it feels nice for them. It’s very nice to be nominated.”
Offering an update on her husband, who was in a coma for a year after contracting Covid-19, Kate said: “He’s still in hospital. He had to go back in due to the acute crisis with his kidneys, but now we’re on the right side of things.
“Hopefully he’ll be coming home soon,” she added.
