Kate Garraway shares sad Derek moment as he struggled behind the scenes of new ITV show

Kate Garraway has opened up about the health of her husband Derek Draper who has been battling the long-lasting effects that Covid-19 has done to his body on Good Morning Britain.

During Thursday’s instalment of the popular ITV morning show, the 54-year-old broadcaster joined Susanna Reid and Ben Shepherd onto the show to discuss the success of her latest ITV documentary Love Your Garden.

The blonde bombshell explained how she has filmed the series back in the summer of 2021 which had been postponed due to Covid-19 as she explained how has gone on to vastly develop her wellness garden since.

And her supportive co-hosts couldn’t help but notice how well her loving husband appears to be after he is filmed enjoying the fruits of her labour in the family garden throughout the documentary.

It’s clear to see her gushing with pride over her partner’s recovery from the devastating illness but she confirmed that life has still been difficult for the pair as the production team helped her carry him out to the garden to film behind the scenes.

As she discussed the overwhelming success of her documentary with entertainment correspondent Richard Arnold, she revealed that the series was actually filmed more than a year ago.

Susanna noted: “Derek looks so well” after sharing a clip from the popular documentary as Kate gave an insight into the reality of filming with her husband.

Kate replied: “He looks great, now of course, this was a project I did last year, I realise there’s a lot of Garrayway around at the moment because it’s all been held up by Covid.

“But I did it [the documentary] throughout the season last year so that was actually Derek towards the end of last summer when we got some fruits from the autumn.

“And we still hadn’t got the lift working into the garden so it did involve the entire Love Your Garden team having to carry him down the stairs, so a big thanks to their muscle and he was able to get outside.”

Ben Shepard chimed in with: “How lovely that he was able to get down there and enjoy it” as they watched the touching scenes on the show.

Kate continued: “It was amazing, absolutely amazing. It was one of the things when he was in the coma – we talked about this didn’t we and with you Richard.

“I would tell him, ‘We’re going to get you back into your chair in the garden’ and things to describe and relate to him so it was lovely to see it.”

Since the documentary aired, the pair have received ground-breaking medical treatment following a 11,000-mile trip to Mexico.

After her first Documentary Finding Derek received a wave of support from fans all over the country including a world-renowned doctor over in Mexico City.

He has since come on leaps and bounds and been able to enjoy some of the small things in life including making the most out of his beautiful garden.
