Kate Garraway 'slept for first time in two years' after taking break from husband Derek

Kate Garraway has revealed she “slept for the first time in about two years” after taking a break from her husband Derek Draper.

The 54-year-old presenter has been caring for her husband since he fell gravely ill with coronavirus in March 2020.

The former Labour Party advisor returned home in April 2021 after an almost year-long hospital stay and his return to the family house will be explored in the follow-up ITV documentary Caring For Derek.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain ahead of the documentary airing on Tuesday, Kate revealed she had spent a night away from Derek the previous evening.

Speaking to presenters Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley, Kate said: “Well actually, if I’m looking a bit puffy eyed this morning, it’s not because I’ve been crying or because I’ve been disturbed for once.

“It’s because my lovely friend Clare Nasir and her husband Chris have been looking after me and I’ve slept for the first time in about two years.

“And actually Derek’s sister Di is with Derek so he’s doing good.

During her interview, Kate also revealed that she “burst into tears’ after missing an ‘extraordinary Derek moment’.

The Life Stories host said that she had only witnessed Derek hug his son Bill in his first “movement activated by emotion” while watching the Caring For Derek documentary – leading her to break down crying.

Kate said: “That is the first moment we’ve seen him be able to activate a movement prompted by emotion.

“Because I was outside dealing with bringing in all the kit and medication I only saw that when we watched the footage back a few months ago and I burst into tears.”

Kate appeared on Lorraine later in the morning, where she revealed that she had had seen glimpses of the old Derek since he returned home.

She also said she sometimes felt a ‘tsunami of alone-ness’ and was on the “verge of grief and delight all the time” since Derek’s return.

Good Morning Britain airs from 6am on weekdays on ITV and Caring For Documentary airs at 9pm on Tuesday on ITV.
