Katherine Ryan slams Will Smith as she tells him 'stay home if you can't take a joke'

Katherine Ryan has spoken out on the moment Will Smith smacked comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars 2022.

TV stand-up Katherine suggested Smith should have ditched the annual award ceremony and stayed at home if he couldn’t take a joke.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star walked up on stage to slap Rock at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday March 27 in a moment which has since gone viral with millions of views.

It came after Rock made a hair joke about Will’s fellow actor and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, who has a hair-loss condition called alopecia.

The joke compared Jada to G.I Jane – a character with a shaved head played by Demi Moore in the 1997 film of the same name.

Will, who later won Best Actor for his performance in King Richard, issued a formal apology for his behaviour.

Katherine has since taken to to social media to offer her view on the shocking ceremony moment, which left the room full of Hollywood stars speechless in its aftermath.

Katherine discussed the altercation with her followers on her Instagram Stories, later sharing some of her fans’ views.

One fan told Ryan: “I don’t condone what he did, violence is never the answer but just because Chris is a ‘comedian’, it means Will has to sit and watch his wife be insulted? Chris shouldn’t have said it, Will shouldn’t have hit him.”

Replying to the comment, Katherine said: “Yes, he has to sit and watch his wife be insulted, yes that’s the point of the celeb monologue.

She then added: “Can’t take a joke, stay home,”

Later on, another user felt there was a lack of attention being given to Jada’s hair-loss condition.

They wrote: “I felt the same initially about Smith (get back in your box, dude) but the focus on the slap itself and not the humiliation of a Black woman with a condition on a world stage surely isn’t being given enough focus?”

Rock was on stage to present the award for Best Documentary Feature when he made the G.I Jane joke.

Referring to Jada’s buzzcut, he said: “Jada, I love you – I can’t wait for GI Jane 2”.

Pinkett-Smith revealed she shaved her head due to the condition last year.

She said: “It was terrifying when it first started,” before adding: “I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, oh my god, am I going bald?”
