Reality star Kim Kardashian undertook an extreme diet in order to fit into screen siren Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “naked” dress, which she wore to sing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy in 1962.
The star completely banned carbs and sugar for three weeks in a bid to fit into the extravagant number.
The 41-year-old’s comedian and actor boyfriend Pete Davidson, 28, looked like all his birthdays had come at once as Kim debuted new platinum blonde hair at the fashion world’s most coveted night out.
Speaking at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday night, Kim said: “This is Marilyn Monroe’s dress – it’s 60 years old.
“I had this idea to put it on and try it on. They came with armed guards and gloves.
“I tried it on and it didn’t fit me – I had to lose 16 pounds. I was determined to fit in it… I did it.”
With the 2022 theme America: An Anthology of Fashion, the billionaire SKIMS boss had been plotting the show-stopping outfit since last year’s event.
She told Vogue: “The idea really came to me after the Gala last year. I thought to myself, what would I have done for the American theme if not the Balenciaga look?
“What’s the most American theme you can think of? And that’s Marilyn Monroe.
“For me the most Marilyn Monroe moment is when she sang Happy Birthday to JFK, it was that look. Nowadays everyone wears sheer dresses, but back then that was not the case.”
Kim admitted the reason the dress is “so shocking” is that it is the “original naked dress”.
In addition to dropping carbs, Kim ran on a treadmill and wore a sauna suit twice a day.
She said of Marilyn: “I always thought she was extremely curvy.
“I imagined I might be smaller in some places where she was bigger and bigger in some places where she was smaller.
“So when it didn’t fit me I wanted to cry because it can’t be altered at all.
“I wanted to cry tears of joy when it [the zip] went up.”
The £4million frock, which has 6,000 hand-sewn crystals, was borrowed from Ripley’s Believe It or Not! attraction, and after walking the red carpet, Kim swapped into a copy so the original dress would not get damaged as she partied with the likes of Tesla boss Elon Musk, 50.
