Love Island's Shaughna claims producers 'help write recoupling speeches'

Former Love Island star Shaughna Phillips is known for being completely open about her time in the villa.

Appearing on Alex Light & Em Clarkson’s Should I Delete That podcast, she revealed the infamous recoupling speeches islanders perfectly read off the top of their heads have actually been constructed with the help of the show’s producers.

“You kind of go over it with a producer before that night so during dinner time you kind of talk through it,” Shaughna explained.

When Em and Alex asked if Love Island’s recoupling scenes had to be repeated, Shaughna gave her insider scoop. “You don’t normally have to re-do… if it’s something very dramatic, then obviously they can’t really redo that.”

According to her experience, recouplings take “hours” due to the staggered pace producers recommend contestants speak at.

“When you’re doing, like, the ‘I would like to couple up with this person because…’ you do that in three sections. So you say that, and then you have a big pause, then you say the next bit, pause,” she said.

She also exposed the nature of the conversations in the villa, revealing contestants were guided by the crew to ‘grab people for chats’ and steer conversations.

“They kind of ask you to go for chats and certain things. It’s a TV show, so I get it,” she confessed.

Looking back on the Casa Amor recoupling, Shaughna admitted she could hear the producers count down before letting a couple come back from the second villa, saying, “you’d know when someone had come out of Casa Amor so you’d be able to brace yourself.

“But I don’t think they knew we could hear that,” she added.

She went on to slam the Heartbreak Challenge, labelling it “the vilest thing ever”.

“I cried from lunchtime to the minute I walked out [to dance],” she recalled.

During her time on the show, Shaughna was coupled up with Callum Jones, who eventually ditched her during Casa Amor for Molly Smith.

Shaughna was dumped from the island after failing to convince Luke Mabbott to choose her over Demi Jones.

Fans loved Shaugna’s no-nonsense attitude and cheeky one-liners, including the iconic phrase, “Congrats, hun.”
