She told the Daily Star: “My point of view is that if you are northern, working class and you’re from a single parent family and you don’t go to BRIT school, you have no opportunities, you don’t.

“You can play at pubs but you won’t get anywhere, you might go to a record label like I did and they’ll tell you that your surname isn’t emotional enough and to change your surname to Lucy Diamond because Spraggan is a northern, Scottish surname.

“Northern people in our industry, they come from reality TV so there is a place for it.”

The hitmaker who was the first act to perform her music and has released more albums than any other X Factor artist continued: “There isn’t a place for walking out in front of an audience and letting them boo you.

“That doesn’t happen in life, I’ve never walked into a record label and said ‘here’s my album what do you think guys, we’re going to release it’ and anyone’s ever looked at me and gone ‘booo!’ or been like ‘I think you look sh*t’ like they do on reality TV.

“It’s a place and platform for working-class northern people to have their shot.”

Speaking of the alleged welfare issues raised by former contestants, Lucy said: “If that show comes back, I can guarantee that it won’t come back without the correct welfare and I’ll make sure of that.

“My book comes out next year which is why I know I’m going to have the power to make sure people get properly looked after.”
