He told fans: “I just wanted to come on here and say a massive, massive thank you to all of you for the love and support for me and Phill over this last year.

“I’ve had an absolute blast. I love this place, I love this show. What a ride it’s been for big Phill.”

He went on to tease that the character could return one day in the future, but for now, it was time to go.

“Who knows maybe it isn’t the end. Maybe they’ll bring him back. But for now it’s a massive goodbye from me, and again just sending loads of love to everyone here at corrie, to all of you guys for tuning in and watching and giving me support.”

Fans began voicing their dismay at the news on Reddit, with one viewer gushing: “I know it’s the nature of the show and all that but I guess we should’ve known when Phill never actually bought a flat or anything on the street.

“It’s pretty much an unspoken rule that anyone living off the street is temporary with very, very few exceptions.

“A shame too because I really loved him.”

A second echoed: “I’m just holding onto the hope when he says ‘Maybe he’ll be back’. Corrie producers, I know you’re in here somewhere, keep Phill! Give him a Ken Barlow salary!”

While a third predicted the star will eventually return to Weatherfield.

“I think he’ll be back, it may take a few months as we know it takes quite a while to plan with scripts etc, I know he’s booked for panto in Crewe. I’d say Phill has become a popular character and I’m sure many of us would like to see Phill find happiness.”
