Meghan Markle defended by GMB's Alex Beresford after Mandela comparison claim

Good Morning Britain’s weatherman Alex Beresford has once again stood by Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle.

Earlier this week, the 41-year-old former Suits star came under fire after she aired comments made to her at the premier of the Lion King.

According to the Duchess of Sussex, her royal wedding was compared to Nelson Mandela being freed.

Speaking about the alleged conversation she’d had with an actor of the stage performance in 2019, she said he’d told her: “When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the street the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.”

Further scandal lurked as a composer of the production came forward to deny he’d had this conversation with Prince Harry’s wife.

Composer Lebohang Morake, who is better known as Lebo M, spoke out recently to say he “does not remember” ever discussing Nelson Mandela with Meghan during his “less than a minute” conversation with her at the event.

Another actor, thought to be the only South African cast member belonging to the Lion King performance at the time, also denied having the conversation with the mum-of-two.

When speaking with The Cut, it was claimed that Meghan had suggested she’d been told her marriage to Prince Harry led to widespread happiness across South Africa which was likened to Mandela’s 1990 release from prison.

Weighing in on the situation which has since caused widespread debate, the GMB presenter took to Twitter with a screenshot of Meghan’s interview.

He wanted to highlight her comments and the comparison and provide an explanation.

Throwing support behind the duchess, he penned on Twitter: “So Meghan Markle compared herself to Nelson Mandela? No, she didn’t.

“Whilst I personally wouldn’t compare their wedding to Mandela’s long walk to freedom, it’s what HE felt.”

He added: “Undoubtedly it was a moment that many people of colour never thought they’d see…”

Heaps of fans dived on the post to thank Alex for jumping to Meghan’s defence on the matter.

One person responded “… ‘It’s what HE felt.’ Thank you, context matters.”

“Thanks Alex. I think any reasonable person got what she meant,” echoed a second, while a third person penned: “He didn’t even compare Meghan to Mandela!

“He compared the celebration of the release of Mandela to Meghan getting married into the Royal Family.”
