Meghan Markle sported a dazzling gown when she attended the Salute to Freedom Gala in 2021 and has now revealed her choice of outfit came after years of trying to “blend in”.
The first three episodes of the highly anticipated series Harry & Meghan dropped on Netflix on Thursday (December 8) and allowed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to share “their story”.
In the third episode, the 41-year-old reflected on the outfit she chose to wear for the gala which was their first major public appearance since stepping down from royal duties.
The stunning gown in question was fiercely red and boasted a plunging neckline as well as a thigh-high split – everything that went against the royal dress code.
Reflecting on the outfits she wore before stepping down, the Suits actress explained: “Most of the time that I was in the UK, I rarely wore colour,” before a slew of images were shown of the star while partaking in royal duties.
“You can’t ever wear the same colour as her Majesty if there’s a group event,” she continued, adding: “But then you also shouldn’t be wearing the same colour as other senior members of the family.”
Talking to the camera, Meghan admitted she thought about colours that senior members of the royal family would “never wear” which led to her choosing outfits that bared neutral tones including camel and beige.
“It was so I could just blend in. I’m not trying to stand out here. There’s no version of me joining this family and not doing everything I could to fit in,” the mum-of-two explained.
She added: “I don’t want to embarrass the family.”
After the series dropped, viewers took to social media with the same complaint as they slammed the “poisonous” documentary.
One viewer asked: “Harry & Meghan – Where is all this poison coming from? Why is Harry so intent on attacking his own flesh and blood? Is it resentment, jealousy, a strong desire to be number one, not the spare? Or is it mainly the influence of Meghan?”
While another remarked: “I love my family- we fall out, we get cross, we have disputes, but never in a million years would I make a multi-part documentary slagging them off for cash. Harry & Meghan are truly cheap.”
