Naga Munchetty reveals BBC Breakfast 'rule' after fire alarm chaos interrupts interview

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty made a hilarious confession on Friday morning after a fire alarm went off during MP James Heappey’s interview.

James appeared on the show via video link to discuss the latest developments of the Ukrainian humanitarian crisis and what Britain has done to help.

However as the MP got further into the discussion with Breakfast host Charlie Stayt, the fire alarm test went off in his building leaving him “embarrassed” as he apologised profusely for the noisy disruption.

But as the interview came to a close Naga mentioned to Charlie that they manage to have “control” over the fire alarm status at the BBC and it doesn’t go off while they are both on air.

Naga claimed there is control over the fire alarms when herself and Charlie are on air

To finish the interview, Charlie said: “James Heappey, there’s not much we can be certain about at the moment but we can at least be certain that the fire alarm system in the Ministry of Defence is indeed operational.”

Interrupting the presenter, James responded: “I’m so sorry, sorry!”

Charlie responded: “It happens, thank you very much for your time.”

But as Naga and Charlie laughed about the calamity James was in, Naga said: “It’s just reality isn’t it, eh.”

James apologised for the disruption

She continued: “No fire alarms, we actually manage to have control of the fire alarm status when we are here. Nothing between 6 and 9:15.”

Laughing, Charlie said: “Is that right?”

“I think so, I think so, no drill. We’ll see.”

Turning to weatherman Matt Taylor who was waiting patiently to give the latest weather update, Naga said: “Matt, let’s hope that remains true during your next few minutes.”

Naga made a joke about the disruption

Seeing the disruptive scenes unfold, one viewer took to Twitter and wrote: “State of Heapey,” beside laughing emojis.

While another chimed: “It takes only a fire alarm test to make a Tory minister feel ’embarrassed.'”

During his interview, James also discussed the latest controversy surrounding P&O cruises after 800 employees were sacked with plans to replace them with cheaper agency workers.

As the Secretary of State for the Armed Forces, James admitted to “feeling sorry” for the staff who lost their jobs and said he wished P&O had engaged with the government more regarding the roles.
