Neighbours stars in tears after crisis meeting with bosses before show axe

Neighbours stars have been pictured in tears after having a crisis meeting with bosses about the future of the Australian soap show.

After 37 years of being on the TV, the long-running show has been axed from Channel 5.

Leaving the Nunawading Studios in Melbourne, the cast – including April Rose Pengilly, Tim Kano, Jackie Woodburne, Jemma Donovan, Tim Kano, Freya Van Dyke, Matt Wilson – were all snapped leaving.

April, who is best know for playing Chloe Brennan, looked red-faced as she hid behind a pair of large black pair sunglasses.

Walking from the studios, she held tightly onto a Neighbours script.

Jackie, who has played her character Susan Kennedy for 27 years, could be seen frowning in her car as she sat in the driver’s seat.

Also spotted leaving the studios were Jemma, who plays Harlow Robinson, and Freya, who plays Zara Selwyn.

The pair both seemed to be in their own little worlds as they left the Australian soap meeting.

It is reported that Fremantle Australia had been discussing the long-running show with Channel 5 to attempt to keep it on air.

However, to fans’ disappointment, their beloved show will no longer air past the summer, as confirmed in a statement from Channel 5.

A spokesperson told Daily Star: “Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.

“It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

“We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

“We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”

Neighbours has featured some huge stars including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie since airing 37 years ago

Neighbours, which first started in 1985, has featured some huge stars in its 37 years of airing, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe.

It has been reported that there is a gap in revenue of millions of pounds from what the Australian show makes in advertising and what it costs to produce.

A source told The Sun: “Channel 5 pay Fremantle Australia many millions of pounds every year and, sadly, there’s a shortfall of about £5million in what it brings back in through advertising.”
