Convicted double murderer Colin Howell, who is played by actor James, killed his wife Lesley and the husband of his lover Hazel Buchanan and framed it to look like the suicide pact between the spouses of the two lovers.
However as fans got stuck into the tense drama, many couldn’t believe what they were witnessing and took to Twitter in their droves to share their thoughts.
One person wrote: “Watching The Secret on Netflix. A true story which makes it more shocking.”
Another penned: “I was shook. True story as well.”
Meanwhile a third wrote: “The Secret on #Netflix was a really good watch, played out so well by James Nesbitt & Genevieve O’Reilly so sad to think this actually was a true story.”
“The Secret on #Netflix is just sick. Completely shocking.”
In 1991, Hazel and Colin had started an affair just a year before the devastating murders took place.
At the scene of the murders, Lesley was found holding photos of her four children, along with Hazel’s husband Trevor, in a car filled with exhaust fumes.
It was reported that Colin had murdered Lesley with a garden hose that he connected to a car’s exhaust pipe while she was sleeping.
Hazel also helped with the murders by drugging Trevor with a spiked sandwich before he was killed by Colin, using the same hose.
The pair were then placed in the vehicle where the deaths were made to look like it was a planned suicide.
Lesley and Trevor’s murders were undetected for 18 years before Colin admitted to their killings nearly two decades later.
Colin’s eldest son Matthew had passed away in an accident at the age of 22, and Colin had lost hundreds of thousands of pounds in a scam.
It’s believed that Colin began to think that God could be punishing him for what he did, which led him to confess many years later.
Colin was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in prison for the murders. Meanwhile, Hazel was sentenced to 18 years.
Collin is currently serving time in Maghaberry Prison, while Hazel remains in Hydebank Prison in Belfast.
