Netflix's The Crown slammed for 'sadistic' scenes of Princess Diana's car crash

Netflix series The Crown has faced backlash from fans after filming Princess Diana’s fatal car crash scene close to the site it happened 25 years prior,

The beloved series will catapult back onto our screens for the next chapter at the beginning of November, but they have already been spotted filming Princess Diana’s car crash scene for series six.

On November 9 the fifth series of the Netflix drama will be available to stream, but the cast and crew who will star in the yet-to-be-seen series are already working on the next.

Series six will include the events running up to the late Princess Diana’s tragic death, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki – but some fans are less than impressed after it was caught on camera being filmed near the location of the car crash that killed the Princess.

Princess Diana died aged 36 in August 1997 in hospital after she was injured in the fatal accident in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris.

Dodi Fayed, the Princess’s partner and the driver of the Mercedes-Benz W140, Henri Paul, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Although a Netflix spokesperson has said the exact moment of the crash impact will not be shown, new photos show the moment that Princess Diana’s car was being chased being filmed and re-enacted.

A spokesperson for the drama said: “The Crown Season 6 will cover the lead-up and aftermath, but the crash will not be featured.”

Actors portraying paparazzi can be seen running towards the car, while motorcycles and cars can be seen chasing black Mercedes whereas actress Elizabeth Debicki can be seen sitting inside.

When the photos were released, fans flooded social media with their views on the controversial snaps.

“Wow, #TheCrown has gone too far. #PrinceHarry this has crossed the line & is disrespectful of your mother the late #PrincessDiana. Filming 100 yards from where the crash happened, how desperate is #Netflix to cash in on the #RoyalFamily.”

While someone else said: “This is classless and should not be done. This is poor taste and judgement.”

This comes as one of the late Diana Spencer’s friend, Simone Simmons, slammed The Crown bosses for being “cruel” and “rewriting history”.

She recently spoke to The Sun where she said: “These are cruel, sadistic and wicked people to recreate these moments. They are the lowest of the low.

“They are rewriting history as they go along and that’s what makes me very angry.”

Simone continued: “Netflix are deliberately reviving the most painful time in the boys’ lives.

“It’s forcing them to relive the pain, agony, and psychological torment they suffered when their mother died.”

Branding the plans to reenact Diana’s final moments as “disgusting” and “sick”, she added: “Why are they setting out to upset William and Harry?

“The makers of this programme do not care about the heir to the throne and everything he has been through.

“Why do these callous, insensitive people feel the need to recreate that horrible day?”

The Crown seasons 1 – 4 are available to stream on Netflix, while season 5 will debut on November 9.
